I though of this question when I read the thread about insuring an amethyst, but I did nt want to thread jack
I will (hopefully, this is really up to bf to decide) soon have my engagement ring. We are in the US at the moment and for the next three months, but live in the UK permanently. I don t want to wear it uninsured. Should I insure it here for three months, and then insure it again in the UK. Is there any way of doing it in one go?
Also, do I need an appraisal? Its an unheated color change, bi color sapp in a platinum James Meyer setting. I would like the appraisal to be a little more than we paid (to counter out inflation), but not too much as I don t want to pay a huge insurance premium. We are in the Chicago area. Any recommendations for appraisers?
We had a bad experience with a London jeweler (when we were thinking of settings). He told us our sapp was worth £400 (we paid quite a bit more), there was no difference between heated and unheated and a certificate meant nothing, and he wanted us to send the sapp back and sell us a very ugly, nearly black, sapp instead.
Thanks in advance to all you knowledgeable people!

Since you want it insured, a detailed appraisal is best for the stone and setting. The appraisal should also be sufficient for the UK insurance company, if I’m not mistaken. If you want it only insured once, you may have to deal with a UK company from the start. It should not matter where you wear the ring, be it Zimbabwe, Italy or Japan. The appraised value is not determined by how much you paid, etc. It is determined by the estimated current market value that the stone and setting goes for and also replacement price. I highly recommend Richard Sherwood even though he is in Florida. Getting an appraisal by a jeweller presents a conflict of interest because he is obviously going to want to sell you a stone from his inventory. If you choose to go with someone else, make sure it is an independent appraiser.

A PS search also yields these 2 in IL:

Thanks a million Chrono- off to have a look at your links!

Richard Drucker looks good. Thanks again Chrono.

You’re welcome. I’ve never used services offered by either but I figured if they are listed here, they must be pretty good.

Richard Drucker is outside Chicago and is an excellent choice as is Sherwood.

Good luck,
