Hello, the diamond I am thinking about purchasing has been evaluated by a German company called Deutsche Gesellschaft Fur Edelsteinbewertung, or DeGEB for short. As anyone heard of them? If so, how do they compare to GIA?

DeGEB seems to be a member of DEL, which was explored on another thread found below, but I don't know how if DEL holds all of its members to the same standards.

Company Website: http://gemcertificate.com/index2.htm

Diamond specs from the evaluation are: G (Top Wesselton) & vvsi (2) for a 1.7 carat princess cut diamond.

Thank you for your time!

Never seen it mentioned before on the forum, we usually recommend sticking to GIA or AGS certificated stones although there are some reputable labs in Europe, such as HRD.

Is the certificate really by DeGEB not by their sister/daughter company DPL? (Diamantprueflabor). DPL is the main German "certificate" they are very reputable within Germany. At least that's my info from when I still lived in Germany five years ago. However, I have no clue how they compare to GIA, AGS or even HRD.

Edit: I just checked on their website The company you named doesn't do grading, they do valuation, so they don't compare to the grading labs. Grading would be DPL.

That are many companies and individuals who are GIA and AGS members. However, their appraisals don't replace GIA/AGS lab grade reports.

The same logic can be applied here. DeGEB may be a member of a reputable institution. But no appraisal replaces a lab grade report.

Got it, thanks for the input! This makes me a bit worried now. Is it likely that the valuation can be that far off from the results found in a lab? If this diamond is actually a GIA SI1, I color, I would still be happy with the purchase.

DeGeb is one of the respected names in Europe, as well as already mentioned DPL. Typically old-school BM jewellers and private persons tend to use DeGeb services in Germany. I personally would not rely on their valuation, as it reflects high street pricing in major European cities (e.g. Very high). At the same time their judjement of diamond quality seems to be rather consistent, however I have not seen stones graded by GIA/AGS after DeGeb appraisal, so I would not be able to tell for sure.

I have seen diamonds with double grading through DPL and HRD or GIA and the grades were mostly in line. In some cases there was 1 grade difference, but that happens betweens AGS and GIA as well. DPL also seem to be jewellers' choice around here together with HRD and GIA when they choose stones for their inventory.
