My DH wants a new camera... Even though I don''t understand it, he rarely asks for anything super expensive so I think I will indulge him on this purchase for Valentine''s Day (what a sweet wife I am , HAHAHA!)

The two models he is trying to decide on are either:
(1) Canon 500D with a second lens (55-250 mm) ($~1000). or
(2) Pentax K-x 12.4 MP Digital SLR with 2.7-inch LCD and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL and 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED Lenses. ($~700)

What do you think of the two above and which would you pick?

Thank you for helping me to be a generous wife!

Both are good cameras, and both are great for casual use (as I assume he would be using them). Personally, I would go with the Pentax just because it offers more options with that extra lens, but they are fairly equal in image quality.

Thank you MP!
Could you explain what you mean by "casual use"?
I want to add that the Cannon has 2 lens also: Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS Lens + Canon 55-250mm IS Lens.

I would go with the canon that lens combo is superb for the money and will serve well.
The pentax isn''t bad but the lens selection is lacking.

A lot of people seem to like Canon. I am just wondering if it is really that much better of lens that''s worth $300 more?

Thanks!

By casual use I meant that he wouldn''t be using professionally - just for his own personal use!

Yes, like Karl said the Canon will have more options for lenses down the road, but it isn''t exactly superior to the Pentax. I know several professionals that use Pentax cameras and the images are just as good as the ones from a Canon or Nikon. If you feel like he will want more lenses in the future, then it might be prudent to go with the Canon if he wants more options. If he feels that the two lenses from the Pentax kit will be enough to satisfy him, then it is equally adequate.
