Hi Pricescope,

Since Gypsy's thread https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/what-is-this.179549/

I've come across a few old round diamonds cut in this style. I'm wondering whether experts can advise what kind of cut this is and period are these stones? Is this style of cut unusual/rare? Is this round going to be beautiful and interesting?

Appreciate any input and please share your own images and experiences if you have one like this!

A local find - store advises it's from the 1920s

Ooohhh! Tranny! That checkboard cut is unmistakable! :)

The precision of the faceting together with a very small culet leads me to think this is a transitional stone, done in the period between Old European cuts and the modern Round Brilliants.

The diamond may not be the original one in the setting. It's possible that a setting from the deco period may have been set with a later diamond.

Those look like transitionals.

Thanks for your helpful answers. A swapped center stone in an old setting is not something I would have thought of!

I now know I love transitional / checkerboard cuts! I'm trying to learn how to identify a nice one - any hints would be appreciated. Any comments on the ones posted also may help.
