Hi everybody,
I have a jewel jet and cononsieurs cleaner from walmart. Any recommendations on what and how to clean old stones?
I read to avoid ultrasonic cleaners for old jewelry....

If the diamond/piece is particularly greasy or dirty, soak it in a combination of warm water and ammonia for about 15 minutes. Brush with a baby toothbrush under warm water.

For loose diamonds which are particularly greasy, I often soak in vodka for about 5 minutes (yes, vodka is GREAT for degreasing diamonds). While waiting, I typically like to have a shot or two just so I know that vodka' still good and wont harm the diamonds :naughty: :naughty: .

I then use my jewel jet steamer (with distilled water only, as our water is particular hard), and dry off with a compressed air duster (this avoids water stains). A blow dryer will work just as well, on the low setting.

That ought to give you VERY sparkly jewelry!

Thank you so much. :wavey: I have the jewel jet and that's a good idea to use distilled water. jewel jet usually does a good job.
Is it safe for the steam pressure on antique diamonds/settings?

What type of setting will you use it on?

Grace has you covered! I would just add not to use ammonia on white gold pieces as this can alter the finish, apart from that, ammonia is a very useful diamond cleaner.

As for the jewel jet, I believe it is safe for most settings but be careful using ultrasonic cleaners with pieces containing melee as the vibrations can loosen the stones.

Scrubbing bubbles and a soft tooth brush. Ever so often give it a good steam clean or take it to the jewelers to do it for you.
