Antique appraiser?????

I am posting pictures of a diamond pin that hubby inherited just recently. Maybe an appraiser can answer this question. His mother said in her will that he would received this pin and a pencil. Does he need an appraisal since it was specified in the will he would receive those items? Any suggestions would help; thank you very much. I attached some pics.

They are from London, England from the early 1900's

I dont understand your question though. Why would you need an appraiser to look at the will?

sorry, I am asking if he needs an appraisal for those items since she only had a will. Also my hubby is interested in finding out what they may be worth so could someone suggest a good antiques appraiser, please?

He doesn't "need" an appraisal unless he's planning on insuring the items. But it would be fun to know more about the pieces, and how much they're worth, don't you think?

While the pen is turn-of-the-century, the horse is circa 1830-1850.

Asprey is known for fine quality pieces, by the way.

Your hubby MAY need an Estate Appraisal. Whether he does or not depends on the value of the entire estate.

I am not sure of this year''s amount, but I think it is around 1 million until 2010. Then it gets lowered. Check with your attorney and accountant. If the estate has high value, the fact that these items are listed in the will, require them to be appraised - but only if the estate is large enough to be taxed.

This type of appraisal would be to determine how much estate tax would be charged. The value the appraiser has to detemine is set by IRS Fiar Market Value definitions.

A different type of appraisal commonly used by heirs, is an appraisal for equitable distribution. This is usually when several people or more, inherit various items from a relative, but usually the will says "to be distributed equally among x,y and z persons)
This type of valuation helps the heirs to separate and choose the items they each want, and then if the items are not equial in value, the heirs have a basis upon which they can share equally through financial payment amongst themselves.

Oh, you lady''s are so sweet! I thought it was gorgeous when I saw it plus I thought it was so sweet that hubby''s mother wanted him to have it. There are diamonds covering the horse but they are so tiny they are hard to see in the pic. Thank you.

Those are beautiful, Skippy! How special of his mother to leave those things to him. I can see wanting an appraisal for curiosity, but in reality, these items cannot be replaced, so I don''t know that I would get an insurance rider for them, personally.

Thanks Ellen, thank DS, I think he would like an appraisal to find out more about them; what year they were etc. These items were given to her by her father (I know the horse was for sure). I guess for hubby and his dad it would be more about knowing a little more on the history of the items. I am sure he will just keep them in our safety deposit box.
