Here is a diamond I am looking at.....I have no clue what I'm doing when it comes to jewelry and especially diamonds . The dealer wants $4999 for this diamond is that a rip off?

I have a budget of $6000 and want the best princess cut diamond in a solitaire setting for that price and want something around 1ct.
Is that possible?

For the price, and assuming that it is a GIA report, I don't think you are necessarily being "ripped off" - meaning I think that diamond is probably a $5K diamond - however the table and depth are quite deep and, with your budget I believe you can definitely get a better-performing princess diamond. Here's a link with info on princess diamonds: https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/princess-cut-diamond

WhiteFlash has a signature line of princess diamonds called A Cut Above which are ideal-cut, meaning the diamonds are graded Ideal in Symmetry and in Polish, and also receive an Ideal for Light Performance - all of which translates into an incredible diamond performance. (Your diamond above has "Good" for Symmetry and for Polish)

If you want to stick to F-color, here are 2 options from WhiteFlash
http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut-loose-diamond-3022035.htm

If you are amenable to going to H-color, here's a couple more options:
http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut-loose-diamond-2960825.htm

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut-loose-diamond-2959566.htm

Here are some solitaire settings - the 1st is quite basic and comes in at $350; the 2nd two are a bit more sleek and graceful:
http://www.whiteflash.com/engagemen...-solitaire-engagement-ring-for-princess-8.htm

http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/sleek-line-solitaire-engagement-ring-432.htm

http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/contemporary-tiffany-style-solitaire-engagement-ring-for-princess-cut-diamonds-2328.htm

If it were me, I'd probably go for the 1st diamond listed, the 0.967ct F-VS2 at $4908, which basically gives you the dimensions of a one-carat princess without the one-carat price... and I'd put it with the last solitaire listed, the Contemporary Solitaire at $850.

If you do contact WhiteFlash, let them know you are PriceScope member so they apply the discounted diamond price - and if it is your 1st purchase with WF (and since it is over $2,000), you also receive another $25.00 off your order. And, if you pay via wire, you get a further discount.

Awesome information! Thanks

The stone you listed isn't even close to square, which is what a princess normally is, and GIA doesn't call a princess a princess, they call it a "square modified", so I say dump this rock and start looking from AGS or GIA graded stones only.

For your budget I like this stone from whiteflash, http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut-loose-diamond-3062354.htm

This is most likely one of the prettiest princess stones you will see in person and it has the best spread for the ones I saw on their page. Compared to what you first posted, it's Ms. Universe.

*Spread refers to the mm size of the diamond. Two diamonds can have to same weight, both 1.00 but one measures average of 5.3mm and the other 5.5mm, the 5.5mm obviously has more "spread" and will look bigger given the cut and light performance are the same.

Run, Forrest, run!

Good point!

OP, yes, you are getting ripped off! The princess in your first post is most likely graded by EGL-USA -- as such, it almost certainly is overpriced at $5K, and more likely it is massively overpriced. If you want more info re: EGL certificates, run a search on PriceScope for "EGL" and you'll find many, many threads pointing out the inaccuracies/deficiencies in EGL grading.

Bluenile? Color and clarity are important but they are not what makes a diamond "sparkle", that is due to the cut. You can only judge cut on a princess using specialized tools which bluenile does not supply. You would need to get an "ASET" image and link it here to be evaluated for performance. This is why I suggested the whiteflash stone, all of those tests have already been done so you know the stone is a great performer.

Okay, that makes sense. The only reason I ended up on Blue Nile is because every time I Google a diamond question...Blue Nile and Price Scope are the top links so I just looked there.

Again, thanks for the input

If I was shopping for a square diamond I wanted to be sure that the diamond is "square"

The WhiteFlash diamonds posted for you above are FAR better quality diamonds and TOP cut quality. Please just make it easy and buy a great stone. Trying to find a great one in local stores can be a very futile endeavor. That was my experience until I came here and found out where to buy ideal cut diamonds at better prices.

Ditto...WF makes it so easy to buy a princess!

The problem with GIA grading of princess cuts is t here is not cut grade. So you are really flying blind picking one, especially online. The solution to this in my opinion is to look for a princess cut with an AGS lab report. An extremely reputable report, AND they include a cut grade for princess cuts! So, if I were buying, I would only buy an AGS0 graded princess. Whiteflash sells them and you may be able to find them elsewhere as well.

ETA: www.jamesallen.com also sells AGS0 princess cuts. www.goodoldgold.com also sells princess cuts selected for superior optics, even if not AGS0. All three vendors I have mentioned are well respected on PS. You may also be able to find a local vendor who will call in AGS0 princess cuts for you. You will pay more for an AGS0 princess cut. You can look for a .90ct and save money that way. But the CUT is what will make the diamond sparkle. Princess cuts are not known for their amazing optics, so its worth maximizing that property in my opinion, if you can. And you can with an AGS0 princess.
