Hello All,

So my bf and I have been looking at mostly 2ct+ super ideal RBs and in the last couple of days I''ve actually been thinking about looking slightly smaller. You can spend about half the $ for a very fine super ideal RB in the 1.5-1.7 ct range. I guess I''ve been feeling a little guilty about "asking" for such a hefty amount to be spent when something in the 1.5-1.7 ct range is still very sizeable and I have delicate fingers. Additionally, the smaller stone would allow for side stones whereas I think a larger stone would have to be a solitaire for me. On the other hand, I don''t want to regret the smaller stone in a few months and want to upgrade in the near future. I''m almost certain that if I got a 2 ct stone now I would NEVER upgrade (unless it was purely for quality) but I can''t say the same is true for the smaller option. Thoughts????

no you aren''t crazy to think smaller, but just be sure it''s what you want. similarly, be sure the 2c is what you want. you are the one that is going to be wearing it, so no one can really say what you''d be happiest with or want later down the road, but if you are feeling as though a 2c would be too large, then try on some smaller stones? maybe some 3 stone rings to see how you feel?

personally, i love bigger stones, i just upgraded and i will probably do it again next year, but I am a BAD EXAMPLE..of what happens to you the longer you hang around pscope!

anyhow, in the end do what you feel is right for you thinking long term and be sure to try on alot of different varieties of rings, settings, stones combinations etc....that is the way that I became sure about a few things when shopping.

good luck!

i agree with mara....make sure you try on many different sizes, you will soon become aware of what size stone/combination "fits" for you. best of luck!

Nope. But definitely be sure because if you decide later you want bigger, that''s not going to make your man feel very good.

I personally wasn''t a big fan of the big 1.5 ct he had his eye on because it was a monster on my finger. Im happy with my stone now.

I''ve loved the larger stones but I''m not sure how much of that was the "oh my god!" factor. Ame, what size is your finger? I''m a size 4. On cold days, a 3 3/4.

id rather a smaller center with sides and/or an interesting setting that just one 2ct round.................................i mean whats so special about that...........make it special and unique whatever you do

I think you have to decide what you like. I am in the process of upgrading my 1.19 to a 1.5. The 1.5 in the setting I want (which had side stones) was plenty HUGE enough for me. I wear a 3 1/2. anything bigger just looked too big on my hand which made it look fake. I probably won''t upgrade the stone again

i agree, try a bunch of settings on with the different sizes and see which you like and feel comfortable with .

You need to think about is what will make you happy in the future. If it''s the larger stone, go for it. Only you will know. You don''t wan''t to have regrets later.

If your BF is not balking at the 2ct cost, you should consider getting it in a simple setting now. You can always upgrade your setting as an anniversary/birthday/Xmas present. I may be in the minority, but I have a great deal of attachment to my original e-ring stone. I have upgraded my setting, not the original rock.

Good luck and have fun with this!!!

I don''t think you are crzy at all. I tried on some large stones but for a few reasons went for a smaller stone (1.22). I have a small hand and it seemed proportional. I am also very small. It was also very important to me to get an ideal cut and colourless stone and unique setting. As a result, I put more money into those elements than size.

I think youhave to do what is comfortable for you. I wasn''t comfortable with a big stone given my hand and lifestyle but it''s what feels right for you. Size isn''t everything (at least to me).

as everyone else has said, keep trying different sizes and styles on. if you KNOW you''ll want the 2 ct later, why not get it now since bf seems more than willing to pay for it?! for me, i know i don''t want to upgrade so we''re going to save enough money up first so that i''ll be happy with the size forever. it also helps that i have a tiny 3.5 finger!

I think outside of Pricescope wanting or being happy with a smaller stone is really not that unusual. For some it may be purely for financial reasons but for others it''s also esthetics and comfort. At some point huge rocks just start looking gaudy, it''s just that that point is very different for each one of us. My stone is a 1.6 and i''m finding the size to be just right for daily wear (it bearly fits under my glove). Doesn''t mean that I woudn''t want a larger rock at some point in the future but if I get one it wouldn''t be an upgrade, just a different ring that I wouldn''t wear all the time. I see a lot of my friends with larger rocks who eventually stop wearing them unless they''re going out because it just gets in the way (not a common phenomenon on pricescope but does happen to some). Of course wanting a larger stone is quite common too. Obviously, it''s entirely up to you.

You''ve received great advice so far (basically that "it depends"!). I just wanted to add that I remember a while ago that a guy picked out an engagement ring for his girlfriend, proposed, she said yes, but then they exchanged the diamond for something marginally smaller (I think it was about twenty points or so) because the original stone he picked was just too big for her comfort level. All that to say that you''re not alone, and you''re certainly not crazy.

My two cents: an original and beautifully crafted setting with a 1.5 carat stone appeals to me much more than a two carat diamond in an ordinary setting.

Good luck! Whatever you decide will be lovely.

Hello All,

You can spend about half the $ for a very fine super ideal RB in the 1.5-1.7 ct range. I guess I''ve been feeling a little guilty about ''asking'' for such a hefty amount to be spent when something in the 1.5-1.7 ct range is still very sizeable and I have delicate fingers. Thoughts????
What is the opportunity cost involved with spend 1/2 rather than using the whole budget on the 2c? If you will sacrifice nothing (i.e. downpayment for house, investments, savings buildings), then go for the 2c.

1.7 is a very sizable stone. Side by side people will see a difference; but , few will know that it''s not a full 2c. Is that 2c *mark* important to you; or, is saying just under 2c o.k.?

To me, it would all come down to value & expenditures. How much is the extra $$ going to make a difference?

As far as using the extra budget on sides, that''s personal. I like both; but, tend to think that a solitaire says "engagement" more.

I won''t ever upgrade my ering (see avatar) for several reasons:

1) Much bigger will look too large on me for my personal tastes (work with animals for a living, small hands, just not my style).
2) Fiance put so much thought into choosing the perfect ring for me, and I love it so much just the way it is!
3) Anything larger than what''s in it already will look odd. See avatar.
4) More $$$ to buy me a sizeable Asscher pendant, diamond studs, and a nice cushion RHR in a few years!!!

Keep in mind that my .38ct pear looks larger than my mom''s .5ct RB, so my ring LOOKS larger than some, but .38ct is tiny compared to some rings we see, even in the non-PS "real" world. What is important here is that YOU are happy with your ring. And if that means you happily agree to upgrade to 2ct when the time is right, then so be it - be happy!!!

Since you seem undecided, I really think the best course of action for you is to try on, try on, try on!!!! Go and wear some 2 ct solitaires, some smaller 3 stone rings, etc. I don''t think you will really get a sense of what you truly want until you do this. You may feel very strongly one way or the other after you try on a whole panel of different rings and stone sizes.

Why not pick up a cheap 1.5 and 2 ct cz solitaire and wear them for a few days to get a feel for what looks best? Just a thought to avoid a costly mistake. At the very least you will get a feel for what looks best. I did this myself when I was choosing between the two sizes. Ended up with a 1.5 RB with 1.00ctw pear sapphire sides. I like the look of the side stones and the 2 ct was too big on my fingure to accomodate them.

I wear a 5 1/2, 5 on a cold day. A little bit bigger than your hands. I thought the stones over a 1.25 were really just too big but maybe in a few years Ill think differently. I already have enough sanity issues with a .86. Ill go off the deep end if I go any bigger.

I have a 2.37 G ideal cut diamond. I wear size 6. When I got engaged my fiance said get whatever size you want. I thought that I would never want a bigger stone. Guess what I want a bigger stone.....

I would get the 2 carat if it matched my hands, i.e., didn''t look so big that it looked fake. This depends a lot on your hand & finger size. My fingers are long 5 1/2 so I could easily pull off a 2-3 carat. Also a solitaire is very classy, you can always add a diamond wedding band to dress it up. You could always reset it later into the three stone sometime down the line. Just my .02, don''t worry too much about the cost unless you have something else you absolutely need the money for because when you factor in the years you will be wearing the diamond (hopefully until you die which could give you a good 40+ years depending on your age it comes out to pennies a day!

I would go for the 2 carat... I think you will eventually want bigger. I couldn''t go smaller than my 2 carat and I think 3 carat looks lovely!
