So - I''ve only been gown shopping once, but I''m already frustrated! I KNOW! It''s gonna be a long road with this attitude!

Anyway, I''m kind of in love with this dress

(yes, my love changed - whaddayaknow!) but I don''t think spaghetti straps are for me. Do you think I could order extra material and have an off the shoulder gathered strap made? (ala bride wars - Anne Hathaway''s dress). I''ve never seen the back of this dress, so I don''t know how low it is - or how that would work... anyone have any insight!?

TIA!

I''m no expert, but I bet a good seamstress could do that for you. You might not even have to order extra fabric...they could take it from the hem or shorten the train just a tad to have enough fabric for an off-the-shoulder sleeve.

yeah! That''s what I''m thinking! Here''s my crude photoshop of what I have in mind...

Oh it is so pretty! It reminds me a lot of Belle''s dress from Beauty and the Beast.

I definitely think it is possible. Who makes the dress? Some designers (Casablanca for example) can even do the alteration for you when you order the dress.

I think the main issue would be if there is enough support in the bodice for the dress to stay up comfortably without the straps on. If so there should be no problem taking off the straps and doing whatever you want.

You mentioned that you have not seen the back, I assume that means you have not tried it on yet. Not that you weren''t planning on it, but I would make sure you try on ANY dress before ordering it. They have a way of looking different once you put them on which can be great or sometimes disappointing, as was the case for me.

Wow, that is a stunning dress! And I like your concept for the sleeves...

Good point! There is a possibility that the dress has some sort of inner support structure so it isn''t depending just on the spagetti straps to hold it up... as t''kiwi said, you''ll have a better idea of what alterations are possible after you''ve tried it on.

And if you do, don''t forget to take pictures!

Ditto, make sure the dress has enough structure to support the changes in the straps, and check the back to see that altering the strap won''t ruin the line of the dress.

I think the dress looks fabulous with those straps, I am not a big fan of spaghetti straps either.

Thanks everyone! I DEFINITELY will be trying it on before ordering it. I wouldn't order ANYTHING without trying it on first!

It's made by Tomasina - and it says low back - so I've also drawn up this one. If it does have a low back I think this would be more do-able. There is a salon in town that is trying to get one in for me to try on... I haven't been able to find one anywhere in the mid-west! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they can get oneit here for me to try on!!!
