about a year ago i had my wedding set made. ive worn if off and on since then, but in the last few months ive been developing a rash. sorta dry, becomes super itchy, red, and what looks like small blisters.

the set is 14k, ive never had a problem with 14 k before. i still wear 14k on my other hand and have been ok. the reaction doesnt happen all the time either. sometimes it does, sometimes it doesnt. and by no means do i wear my rings all the time. i take them off when i shower most of the time, and i clean them 1-2x a week. and only wear them maybe 3 times a week.

ive spoken with the people who made it and suggest its an allergy. im not so sure.

anyone have any thoughts?

Well it depends on whether it is just around the site of the ring or is on other parts of your hand. Although I am not a doctor, it sounds like it could be eczema or a similar skin condition. Best thing that you could do is go to a dermatologist and have ir properly diagnosed and treated.

I have the similar symptoms as you on the side of my index finger. It starts of really itchy and when I scratch it little blister looking things will form. If you continue to scratch them, they will pop and ooze. I have been to the doctor and he told me it was eczema(basically dry skin). There are creams that treat it though. For me I only experience this in fall and winter when the heater is running. But in any event go to the doctor and find out for sure. Good luck!

It does sound like an allergy or skin sensitivity. In some people, this allergy takes time to develop, hence you did not have the rash right away when you wore your set last year. Also, not all 14K formulations are the same. Is this 14kt yellow or white metal? If white, the rhodium plating may help in preventing direct contact of the nickle alloy to your skin. It could also be irritation where the ring rubs (too tight?) or where water gets trapped. Just throwing out some ideas.

my guess is an allergy. have you had it rhodium plated at all? my sister in law has a huge allergy to WG which is what her wedding set it. she has it plated every 6 months and that takes care of the problem, no more itchy red rash. also, if you wash your hands with the rings on and don''t completely dry them, that along with the metal can cause a rash as well.

Do you notice it after you''ve worn the set for awhile or after you''ve sweated? Also, how wide is your set? I have a ring that gives me a rash if I wear it for long periods of time or I sweat or wash my hands a lot while wearing it. It''s just a reactioin from air not reaching my skin and it clears up quickly with a day or so without the ring and hydrocortisone cream. I''ve heard that painting the inside of rings with clear nail polish will help people with allergies because it creates a layer between the skin and metal. Of course, you just want to put it on the part that comes in contact with your skin, keep it away from detailed areas or stones.

Best of luck.

LOL is sweated a word?

Hi,
If you''ve had your ring for about a year, it sounds like it was Rhodium plated and the plating has started wearing off and your finger is having an allergic reation to the metal under. Best test would be taking it and getting it plated (again) and see if the reaction goes away.

thanks everyone!

together (wedding and engagement set) theyre only 1/8th of an inch wide. they are a tad loose (how i like to wear my rings). although i do wash my hands with them on.

also the rash only appears on the top portion of my finger, and nowhere else. the setting is pretty intricate and not too smooth which i think may be part of the problem.

for those who have had allergic reactions, did switching to 18k yellow gold make any difference? if it is an allergy, i think that may be the only option for me ... or a simple platinum setting. who knows! i just want to wear my rings :)

i dont believe it was plated to start with. and i havent worn it straight for a year. i infact didnt wear it for long periods because i was pregant and had swollen hands!

Yellow gold shouldn''t create a reaction. MY MIL is very allergic to nickle and only wears yellow gold. Your other option is Platinum.

I just typed a long response and it got eaten. Anyway, I had a similar problem with my first wedding set that was 14K yellow gold. It turned out it was more due to the construction style of the bands combined with my either sweating or getting water trapped under the band. Even if I just wore the WB alone it would happen. Ask your doc for a real answer to the problem. You will probably get some sort of cortisone creme to clear it up, but you still wouldn't know if it was an allergy. My daughter is allergic to white metals because her skin gives off an acidic sweat. She is fine with even low grades of yellow gold though.

ETA: I still often get exczema type rashes on my fingers sometimes. I'm very sensitive to chemicals. I do wash my hands a lot too. Also, when I had my rings reset 20 years ago, I didn't get that particular rash anymore, but my bands were wider than yours. I'm not getting any reaction to my new temporary 14K white gold bands right now, and the 3 rings are combined about 6.5mm.

You say you clean your rings a few times a week...Are you very sure you are rinsing them thoroughly?

Could also be a reaction to one of the cleansers you''re using on the ring-- if they aren''t rinsed well, this could be causing a reaction as well...

Try a little over-the-counter hydro-cortisone cream at night and sleep without your ring...See if that clears it up. I''ve had skin allergies all my life and the cream seems to do the trick in most cases. You can find it on any drugstore shelf.

Good luck.
