I have read all about certifications from AGS vs GIA. While the general consensus is that both are very well respected and you really can''t go wrong with either, I am wondering about one possible difference. From looking at a few diamonds, it appears that AGS SI1 stones actually seem to be "cleaner" than most GIA VS2 stones I have seen. While I understand the rating can be due to many factors regarding the inclusions, is AGS more discerning on the clarity grade of a diamond? Just as an AGS "ideal" cut = Ex/Ex for GIA, does it work the same for clarity? Very curious. Thanks everyone.

Hi,

I agree with your observation regarding AGS being a little stricter.

I have not seen a consistent full grade difference (Eg. AGS SI-1 equaling GIA VS-2)

But I would say AGS SI's are a little cleaner on average.

I believe the difference is that the AGS lab grades are done in a much stricter scale environment (and possibly more accurate)than any other diamond grading laboratory. This is a benefit for retailers who use these reports as a selling tool, and for the consumer who possess the document to validate their purchase. Thus, you will see differences in reports from other labs on one stone. The AGS graded stones carry both the AGS & GIA scale rating.

Thanks guys for the reply. The question then becomes is it actually worth the extra $$ to buy an AGS graded stone? Info on the web suggests that AGS stones may carry up to a 10% premium.
