After weeks of searching, I finally found a great rectangular radiant stone through a dealer here in NYC. I also liked the platinum x-prong setting he had for an approximately 1.5 ct. square cut stone...however the same x-prong setting he had for a rectangular stone had a more scrunched shoulder which made it thicker at that point and less elegant in my eyes. However he suggested that his ring maker (formerly with Tiffany's) would be able to probably to make some adjustments.

We finally reached an agreement on the price. However, the following morning I was told that his ring maker would have to actually cast the shank from the square cut setting and then make a custom basket to fit my rectangular stone instead of simply modifying the cast of either the existing square or rectangular setting for my rectangular stone. The charge is $300 extra.

Does this sound credible? Can the ring maker not either use the square cut setting and adjust to fit the rectangular stone? Is the $300 reasonable for the work described (while I had expected the ring maker to actually just modify one of the existing casts at no additional charge)? Thanks for any insight into this.

It sounds very reasonable for a hand made customized setting

Thank you Garry for your quick response to my question. However somehow I was under the impression that ring settings are somewhat flexible to accomodate some degree of differences in carat weight and shape. But I guess it may not be possible to modify a setting for a square setting fit a rectangular stone?

Competent craftspeople have no need to find a hard way to do an easy job - they usually have work piled up.

You sought advice from the tradesperson and got it.

If you ant to tell them to do a cut price job and you will take all the risks - then off you go mate

But you might be penny pinching on a 1.5ct

Yeah, you are absolutely correct Garry. Thanks again for taking the time to provide your feedback.

Some designers hate doing modifications and charge a ton for it.
You might be better off shopping a total ground up custom and see what the cost is.
