Hi All,

So after my earlier post regarding an engagement ring, I have found a diamond I am interested in, but by no means sold on. I just wanted to get some opinions as to whether or not the stone is "on the right track". Here are the details:

1.05 carat
Round Brilliant
GIA Graded
6.52x6.6x4.05
I color
SI1 clarity - Crystal near the edge of the table, but it is eye-clean
Cut – Excellent
Polish – Excellent
Symmetry – Very Good
57% Table
61.7% Depth
34 degree Crown
41.4 degree Pavillion
Flourescence: Medium Blue
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick
Price: $4,343.67

This would be the center stone in a three-stone white gold ring, trellis setting, with the side stones being .25ct each round cut sapphires. Does the stone sound like it would suit my purposes and is the price fair? Also, are the sapphires big enough or will they look too small next to the main stone? Would love any feed back. Thanks, all, you have been a tremendous help so far.

Thanks for the quick response. I''m still a little fuzzy on the HCA score. Is 4.6 awful? I know that the lower the score the better, but I''m just confused since GIA has the cut rated so highly. I don''t want to open a can of worms, but any help would be appreciated. Oh and thanks for the stone recommendation swinggirl, but it''s just a little bit out of my price range, as it is $4,300 is about tipping the scales.

you want HCA score under 2......GIA has a looser grading, some GIA EX are good and some are like the one you posted...

Once again, thanks for the quick response. Is there an easy way to determine the HCA score or are you using a special tool/program?

These are nice options and with a PS discount it would come below $4300.

The HCA is used to weed out the poorly cit stones. Anything that scores 2 or less is worth further consideration. Lower isn't better.

If you can go down in color a bit here's a beautifully cut stone (1.2 HCA) at a nice price.

Thank you all so much for helping this diamond newbie sort this all out. I''ll keep you all informed of my progress. I really appreciate all the help and I''m sure my girlfriend will too!

Hi Lucky,

The reason the diamond you posted scored so poorly on the HCA is because of the steep pavilion angle, the HCA can ding a diamond for this but having said that you can do better and the ladies have given you great advice and options! To give you an idea, the rest of the proportions of the diamond are good, if they were matched with a pavilion angle between 40.6 - 41 degrees then it could possibly be an excellent performer, the angle isn't the best fit.

Okay, I found a new stone I am considering, but wanted to get some opinions on it before committing. Here are the details:

AGS Graded
1 carat
Round Brilliant
6.33x6.39x3.91
I color
SI1 clarity - small feather near the girdle, but it does not break surface and it is eye-clean
Cut – Very Good
Polish – Ideal
Symmetry – Ideal
60.8% Table
61.7% Depth
34.4 degree Crown
40.8 degree Pavillion
Flourescence: Negligible
Girdle: Thin to Thick
HCA: 2.4
Price: $4,400

Is that a good deal? Or should I hold out for something different. Please let me know your thoughts.

The table is large....I would probley pass and try to get under a 2 on the HCA and table under 57.5 or under, but its not bad......get and idealscope to see if worth it or not
