I''ve learned a lot from this website, but it''s still a lot of information to take in. I believe the diamond is over priced. What do you think? The setting is 14kt white gold with 10 princess cut diamonds (total .60ct SI2 H) for $800. I have seen the same setting at other jewelers and it has been priced at $1250.

1-Is the price on the setting somewhat of a compensation for the price of the diamond? I''m not sure how to determine if the setting is over priced too.

Also, I''ve been trying to learn about appraisals. The jeweler said that the diamond is appraised by someone that doesn''t work for them. But is that enough? How do you get a diamond appraised...is it purchased then appraised? Or do you appraise before you buy??

in desperate need of advice....

You can find an appraiser local to you and have one of them explain how to get it appraised easily enough.

The "Ideal" terminology on an IGI report is likely to be bsaed on reasonable parameters, but you must be VERY careful about your reliance on the color and clarity grades. Most regular stores use GIA and AGS reports for their nicest diamonds. Chains tend to use IGI and sometimes misgrading happens, too.

You can''t begin to get good information on VALUE until you have accurate information on the actual quality of the diamond. This won''t happen until some appraiser who is qualified checks it out.

Thanks!
I have contacted a local appraiser. So I will have to purchase the diamond and get it appraised for $65. The diamond is currently set in a solitaire ring. If the diamond is not up to par I hope I will not have a hard time returning it. If I keep the diamond and have it set to the $800 setting, the follow-up is $35. It will include paper work to give to my insurance co. and of course to make sure that the jeweler gave me the same diamond I had appraised. The appraiser also mentioned they do laser engravings for $50. Not sure if I would consider that since I am thinking of upgrading to a 1 ct diamond in the future.

Are there any websites that I can price/compare the setting?
