I realize this topic has been well covered in other threads but I wanted some specific guidance on a stone that I''m presently considering:

1.71
H
VS1
Cut: Ex
Brilliance: Ex
Symmetry: Ex
Table: 55
Depth: 62.7
Crown Angle: 35.5
Pavilion Angle: 41.0

As many others have posted, I was disappointed to see a relatively low HCA score of 3.9 given the excellent GIA cut grade. I have seen this stone in person and liked it, but don''t have much basis for comparison. Is this one worth pursuing? If so, what would be a reasonable price?

Definitely not worth pursuing. It is leaking light and is facing up smaller than similar weight but ideally cut stone, so why pay for the extra weight that is making the stone look worse?

If you look at the diameter, the physical face up dimension of the stone, it should be around 7.7mm. What is the dimension of this stone?

I would recommend passing, I know you can do better.

Here''s a thread that has info on this type of stone (steep/deep), hopefully it will help.

Thank you both for your feedback.

SC - you are correct in your assessment of diameter - this one measures 7.63 on average.

Ellen - Thanks for your response and link - looks like this is a direct hit for the steep/deep issue.

Back to the drawing board...

You''re welcome, and good luck!

Good luck.

Hi Newbie,

This is what we call a steep deep angled diamond with excessive depth, I would pass on this one - it will look small for the weight also.

Agree with the others. Definitely pass.

All, thanks again for the input you provided. I''ve gone back and found another stone that I quite like and I think this one is a significantly better option. The only downgrade that I can see is clarity, but I''m fine with VS2. Here are the stats:

1.75ct
H
VS2
Cut: Ex
Brilliance: Ex
Symmetry: Ex
Table: 57
Depth: 60.2
Crown Angle: 33.0
Pavilion Angle: 40.8
Measurements: 7.81x7.84x4.71

Given how valuable everyone''s input was last time, I wanted to share this information and ask two follow up questions:

1. Is there any reason to believe this one has issues based on the info I''ve provided?
2. Is $13,500 a reasonable price for this stone? This was a preliminary quote and I think it''s negotiable, but I wanted some input on whether I''m starting from a decent place. I''m working with a reputable dealer who has a physical location, so I know I''m not going to get the lowest possible price but want to make sure I''m getting a fair deal.

Thanks!

Looks good, but probably will be on the brilliant cut side, less fire. Which lab graded this stone?

What are the girdles, star and lower pavilion facet numbers?

Price looks good too, if graded by GIA.

Thanks SC. It''s a GIA stone (certified in March).

Girdle is Medium faceted, star is 50% and lower half is 75% (I think these are the numbers you requested but I''m new to cert interpretation so apologies if these aren''t right)

It will be a nice, bright diamond, with perhaps a bit less fire than other ideal cut dimensions.

Ditto Ellen. The star and lower girdle facet percents are also perfectly fine.

Yap, those are the numbers. Looks good then. I asked about the lab because you listed a Brilliance grade on the report? :p Should be polish right?

Yep, my mistake - it was polish. Thanks again!
