Hi, first off I'm a complete novice regarding diamonds, and I am in the market for an engagement ring.

I've recently been to visit a diamond seller in Hatton Garden, London.

I've been looking at some rings which look similar in style to the Tiffany Legacy setting. The deal proposed to me was a Platinum 950 ring (6 grams), approx 0.5 small carats around the ring with the centre stone being 0.57 carat - price inc ring setting was 1900 GBP and this would include a GIA certificate for the diamond. I've ran the GIA cert number on the GIA site and the details of the diamond are:

SQUARE MODIFIED BRILLIANT

Measurements: 4.40 x 4.28 x 3.41 mm
Carat Weight: 0.57 carat
Color Grade: E
Clarity Grade: VS2
PROPORTIONS:

Depth: 79.7%
Table: 71%
Girdle: Thick to Very Thick
Culet: None
FINISH:

Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: None
CLARITY CHARACTERISTICS:

Crystal, Cloud

When cross referencing the diamond proportions with information that appears on various sites (such as diamondarticles) this appears to be a poor quality diamond - would anyone be able to help clear up whether this is a good deal, or if I should walk away.

I did actually see the diamond and it did look nice, but I didn't really have anything to compare it with at the time as most of the diamonds he had to offer looked similar to the one in question.

I am looking for a diamond with a huge sparkle, but the size of the diamond itself is not important - my gf tried the tiffany legacy rings on in store and the smallest carat (0.3 centre, .12 around) suited her hand the most so the size of the diamond isn't important to her, it's the sparkle she likes.

Thank you for reading.

Yap, very thick girdle is very bad, you are paying for the extra weight that is not making the stone look bigger.

Try looking for an AGS0 performance graded princess, AGS is the only lab that grades the performance of a princess cut.

Stone-cold11 - thank you for your help. really sorry but they did offer a second which has similar characteristics, is this any better?

Maybe, the girdle is not that bad but there is really no way to judge the performance of a stone is well cut from just these parameters. The angles of each facet and placement is more important and these are not shown from averaged proportions. Need at least an ASET image.

thank you, I will try to get a hold of one. wish they gave an ASET image with the GIA report.

just looking at the carat weight, it looks rather small.

mine's .47 C and it's already above 5mm.. strange.
