Advice on Designing a Setting

I have decided that I would like to have a go at designing a setting for my beautiful forever diamond! I have to say its a little bit daunting. I don''t have a clue where to start and any advice would be greatfully received.

maisie, I would start by making a list of things that are important to you or that you would like to have apart of your ring. i.e type of metal, how many prongs or bezel/prong set halo, etc. also, do you want a 24/7 ring that you can pop into the ultrasonic for cleaning or would you prefer a more delicate pave setting that might need a little babying. finding pics of all your favorites is a good start too and then weeding out the things about each you do and don''t like. Normally, if there isn''t a ready made setting I''d like, there is usually something very close that I would want to change a couple of things. Going this route might be an option too.

Thanks MrsS. All I know at the minute is that I want Platinum lol! I''m a bit worried because I''m not very artistic at all. I doubt I would be able to make diagrams and drawings of what I want

I wouldn''t worry about making any designs or drawings. find other pictures and that you can email to the designer and let them come up the cad/cam and see if they can bring your idea to life..

I just finished a ring with GreenLake and couldn't be happier. https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/pictures-my-cushion-and-custom-greenlake-setting-have-arrived.76676/ They are very good at starting from nothing, and will work with you from the ground up. Try to find different pictures of things you like and things you don't like (I like those prongs, I like that taper, but this is too wide, this stone sits too high, etc.) Send it all to them and let them work. They will provide you with sketches, a CAD and send you a wax. So you pretty much know what you're getting before it ever arrives. I'm not sure where you're located but location really wasn't an issue, at least for me. I did my entire ring with pictures and E-mails. A few phone calls here and there, but that was it. Good luck.

What I''d probably do is take a note of all the setting that you love. Note what you love about them and what you don''t; what you''d change about each and what you''d keep. I''d see are there any similarities between what you love and what you hate and see will it work if you take out bits and add bits. I''m dying to hear what you come up with. How exciting it will be to have your own custom designed setting!

Maise, the setting that I came up with was actually a combination of two rings, with some minor adjustments. I just looked and looked, until I saw a ring that had the head I wanted. Then I kept looking, until I found the shank I wanted. Then I made a few small changes. Voila! I think this is way easier than totally trying to design a setting yourself, at least it was for me.

Then I just sent all that to the designer, the pics, and a description of what I wanted. Now, if it turns out like it is in my head, I''ll be a happy camper.

I am in the same boat and I recommend going to a place that does custom pieces and asking their advice. also ask to see some of the work they have done.
