Hello, new to the site, and looking for some information from all of the experts.

I've taken my girlfriend quite a few places to try and pick out a setting, or at least get an idea what she's looking for. We've settled on somewhat vintage settings, usually with a halo. But the band has to be thicker or at least taper out to the halo. Also, she wants to wear a wedding band with it at some point, so it's nice if it comes with one. I don't know anything about custom work for a matching band yet if it doesn't, but we'll have a year or so to figure that out if not. We've tried looking online, but she really likes seeing them in person. Some we liked online she didn't like in person, so that's a little risky IMO. This is her favorite of the ones we've seen in person.

I didn't hate Shane Co, but I'm not in love with their diamonds at all. When I asked the guy in the store if he'd mount an outside diamond, he said no. I found a few old threads on here saying that they'd do it for anywhere from $1-3 a point, but they were all 5+ years old. I plan on asking them again tomorrow, but figured I'd see what people on here think too.

Okay, back to the diamond. I (and she) really like the looks of the more vintage cut cushions. The August Vintage ones on GOG are awesome. I was originally set on this one, but I'm not sure if it's a little too small for that setting.

I've looked at the Royal Chandelier ones on ERD as well, kinda like this one:

Anybody else have recommendations for vintage cut cushions? I've talked to someone at whiteflash a little bit and she's seeing what she can find.

So anyway, here's my real questions:

1. Does anyone have recent experience with getting Shane Co. to set an outside diamond?

2. What about GOG, WF, or ERD setting one of their diamonds into the Shane Co. setting that I send them? Am I basically throwing away my Shane Co. Lifetime Warranty by doing this? Or will they even do it?

3. Is it a shame to put the AV Cushion into such a complex setting? Parts of me think it would look nicer in a more simple (solitaire) setting, but I'm of course going to do what the girlfriend wants. Ultimately, will the halo and the rest of a complex setting reduce the difference between a AV and the junk they'll sell me directly at Shane Co.?

Of course, I'm happy to hear recommendations for similar settings on sites I haven't looked at yet. But if it's online, I'd probably want to see it in person before committing to too much.

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

You don't need the warranty from Shane company. Any store with an onsite jeweler can size your ring. Any store will clean it for free. As for the rest, that's what insurance is for. The Shane Co warranty is a worthless gimmick.

Where are you located? Let's see if we can get you to a local place with good selection that is better than Shane Company to see some more settings.

As for the setting. Personally, I would buy the stone. Then give Shane Company a copy of the certificate with the measurements of the stone. And ask them to make the setting for you to fit that stone. Then send it to the jewelery you bought the stone from for setting. That way your stone is insured.

No I would not take an outside stone to Shane Company and ask them to set it.

As for your stone hunt, JA has some antique style. And so does Victor Canera. And near me, Joe Escobar does as well.

Also you don't need to stick to such high color. G and even H are still conservative.

Thanks for the advice so far. I'm in Colorado, I had seen those GabrielNY ones in other posts. I don't think there's a store near me though.

As for the color, I agree that I'm okay going G or H. That AVC was really the only one close to the size I was looking for that was J or above, so that's why.

Personally, I'd get something like this, if it were me, and let the stone shine largely on it's own. http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/pave-and-side-stones/lace-platinum-5934p-1

Yeah, that was my feeling a little bit as well, but she's put her 2 cents in now. Maybe if I hadn't asked at all and surprised her.

Anybody else have recommendations?

HI Colebert,

Is your GF absolutely set on that Shane setting? If not, I just wanted to suggest something like this perhaps?

She seemed to shy away from the split shanks. She's not dead set on the setting, but it's her favorite so far. After everything we've looked at, I'd feel bad moving away from the front runners. Or at least getting one to see in person first.

I understand, absolutely no problem.
