Hi there all

I've lurked here off and on for over a year and have found it a very valuable source of information. I'm now at a point where I'd really appreciated some guidance and advice from all you learned people.

What I'd like is some advice on buying a Halo set, MRB ring for something around 5k USD including diamond and setting.

I'm at the stage of seriously starting to hunt for an engagement ring for my girlfriend. We've had some discussions about marriage (we've both been married before and have both have kids) and I know a little about what she definitely would like as a ring. She has fingers that are around size 7 I believe and is adamant that she does NOT want a solitaire type setting. Every time she's looked at rings through the window, she's picked out Halo style rings as her favourite and considering her finger size and my budget, it seems a wise choice for finger coverage.

Typically when looking at Halo's she has often seemed to prefer a rectangular shaped Halo with a round brilliant centre stone. She also very keen to get a halo which only has stones in the top section itself as she'd like diamonds set into her wedding band and we understand having diamonds set into the band of both wedding and engagement ring can cause damage from rubbing.

One further complexity is that I am based in the UK which makes it very difficult as there don't seem to be any decent online retailers there that show full views on stones etc. Given that fact, I'll need to buy from the US and will therefore have to pay 20% VAT on top of a finished ring. As a result of this, rather the try to squeeze the last pound of value out of a stone, I want to get a stone that we can be very confident will be lovely and avoid the need for returns. Consequently I'd like to get something like a Whiteflash ACA, Brian Gavin Blue or GOG type stone. We're not picky about colour, happy with an I and also SI1 if eye clean.

In terms of setting the one she's seen and liked a lot is the Ritani Halo: http://www.ritani.com/engagement-rings/french-set-halo-diamond-engagement-ring-in-platinum/4974

Example diamonds:

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/0.708-f-vs1-round-diamond-ags-bl-104068959034

Does this all seem like a sensible approach and does buying the finished product from the US have any obvious pitfalls?

Also does anyone have any competitively priced halo settings they can propose - other than the ritani one everything I've found tends to have diamonds in the band and is a lot more expensive.

Thanks all hugely in advance!

I live in the UK and have purchased many times from the US. You are correct about paying 20% VAT but there is also 2% import tax on top - and that's payable on the cost of shipping too which is normally around $100. Most vendors use Fedex to ship to the UK. You might have to pay Fedex before your package is released for delivery so keep an eye on tracking and if you see the package sit in 'International Shipment Release' for more than 24 hours call them and pay the VAT/Import duty over the phone to get the package moving again. Otherwise you will get a letter through the post which will delay your delivery further.

Have you looked at Gabriel & Co settings? They have some really nice halo's with plain shanks. You could buy the diamond and setting from goodoldgold.com as they deal with Gabriel & Co settings.

Whiteflash carries Ritani - I believe they can get any of their settings even if they are not listed on their site. The stone from WF you posted is gorgeous! And one-stop shopping. :)

I prefer Ritani to Gabriel and you know aleady she loves it, so that is a no brainer. I.think you have a perfect combo with the WF stone and WF carries Ritani which BGD doesn't. Great job!

Or if you buy that Ritani setting in 14k white gold you can save around £250 to put towards a bigger diamond or your duties etc

FYI the 2% duty is only payable on set rings. Unset diamonds don't have duty. That probably doesn't help you in any case, because even if you got an unset diamond, you'd need to insure it if you got it set by someone on the UK in case they chip it during setting.

You always have to pay the VAT tho - Unless you want to buy a cheap ticket, and risk carrying it back without declaring it!

I had the exact same dilemma as you and originally got something from Blue Nile.

In the end I cancelled all that and ordered from Victor Canera. You'll pay the 20% no matter where you buy from UK or US, and the 2% is worth paying to get a more vast choice of settings from the US.

Oh and i forgot to mention:

Advantages of Blue Nile:

- They have an entity in Ireland, and you don't need to deal with duty at all, even for returns.
- They have their own signature diamonds.
- They have a vast selection of diamonds (but this is just a list of internationally available diamonds - anyone should be able to source the same).

Disadvantages:

- The settings are all mouldings, and people say made in china. That's not as bad as it sounds, because platinum is platinum! It just means they're not as delicate as a lot of other settings.
- (Very) limited setting choice.
- If you return, you have to pay for shipping, this was about £60 if i remember correctly, plus insurance ($100) which works out at about £100 for each time you return and start again.

Thank you all - the advice has been much appreciated and I've gone ahead and ordered from Whiteflash. Can any of the other UK dwellers offer some advice on what to do about jewellery insurance when you've bought a triple ideal, branded diamond.

Is it simply a case of getting a local jewellers appraisal of the ring and stone and then adding to my house insurance policy or would people specifically recommend getting a bespoke jewellery insurance?

Thanks!
