Hi all!

I am eyeing on a tiffany ring.. its a classic 6 prong solitaire and here are the specs.

Carat: 0.85
Color: E
Clarity: VS1
Sym: excellent
Polish: excellent
Cut: excellent
total depth: 61.7
fluorence: none
star length: 55%
lower half length: 80%
girdle: medium to slightly thick
girdle finish: faceted
culet: none
girdle diameter: 56%
crown: 15.5%
pavilion: 43.1%
pavilion angle 40.9%
crown angle: 35.2%

please help!!

do you think the specs are good? or should i just skip this and invest in a lazare diamond instead?

A little steep in the pavilion angle for that crown angle. I would prefer to see an IS/ASET image before I commit to buying this stone.

Also, what is the dimensions in mm?

Hi cinammon,

Is this diamond actually from Tiffany? This is a combo where both the crown and pavilion angles are on the steep side and may not work well together, leading to light leakage. As Idealscope or ASET image is best to evaluate this angle combo but if it is an actual Tiffany diamond then to the best of my knowledge they don't provide these. What is the diameter measurement too please?

If you are new to this and aren't familiar with Idealscope and ASET then this link explains what they are and their usage

Agree w/ Lorelei- the numbers don't look like the best combination possible, perhaps they have another similar stone?

However, just wanted to comment on the "invest" portion, as well. I hope you don't actually mean that you are hoping to make money on this diamond eventually, because you will lose that battle.

Only you can decide if the Tiffany name is worth the premium to you. For me, it is not and I would prefer an ideal cut from elsewhere.

hi all
this diamond is indeed from tiffany..

i do not have the dimension sad to say..

hmm.. now i am confused...

i saw the lazare ideal cut proportion and compare this diamond from tiffany and the percentage seems to be within what was stated in lazare proportion table as well..

can you please advice what percentage i should be looking at for both crown and pavilion to compliment each other...

p.s. this is for an engagement ring and not for investment.. so its really important for me :)

Here are some numbers you can use as a guideline to help you find a well cut diamond.

depth - 60 - 62% - although my personal preference is to allow up to 62.4%
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above

note - with crown and pavilion angles at the shallower ends ( CA 34- PA 40.6) and steeper ( CA 35- PA 41) check to make sure these angles complement in that particular diamond - eyeballs, Idealscope, trusted vendor input - check as appropriate!

As the above implies, configurations depend on each other. A little give here can still work with a little take there.

from expert John Pollard.

"With that said, here''s a "Cliff''s Notes" for staying near Tolkowsky/ideal angles with GIA reports (their numbers are rounded): A crown angle of 34.0, 34.5 or 35.0 is usually safe with a 40.8 pavilion angle. If pavilion angle = 40.6 lean toward a 34.5-35.0 crown. If pavilion angle = 41 lean toward a 34.0-34.5 crown.

GIA "EX" in cut is great at its heart, but it ranges a bit wider than some people prefer, particularly in deep combinations (pavilion > 41 with crown > 35)."

The angle ranges are hovering around the steep ends, so light leakage is a possibility but not a certainty necessarily. Having said that you could find a diamond with a ' safer' angle combo. However how does the diamond look to you? It is one of those combos which could be fine or it may show leakage but we are missing so much info it isn't possible for us to tell you for sure. If you like the diamond and it looks good away from the store lights if they let you check it out that way ( doesn't go dead in normal light or show any dark dull areas face up) then it could be fine. If you aren't sure then as IceKid suggests, see what others they have.

ooh my i just realised.. i think my crown and pavilion is in degrees and not percentage.. lol

its 35.2 degrees and 40.9 degrees respectively...

does this make any better????? or did you guys already knew that i had that typed wrongly

oops!

Don''t worry, angles are preferred and the same applies, these are still around the steep deep zone.

cinnamon, the specs look great on this last diamond. May I ask who graded it?

Ooh good question! and I do not have the answer!

The jewellery shop is closed for the day already

i went to so many shops today that its all in a blur to me now too! too much bling blings!

If you could find that out, it would help us assess things more.

Thritto.

Thank you all!

I''ve seen Tiffany, Lazare, HOF and destinee today! and they all look beautiful!

Can i know for such specs, how much does it roughly cost or what price range is considered as reasonable?

Online, GIA/AGS graded, inhouse stone, about 4.5-5k. Brick store probably 10-15% more.

You can use the search tool Pricescope your Diamond above to get prices of similar, the prices given are for online stones. Brick and mortar jewellers are typically more expensive but no hard and fast rules as it can depend on area, country ( as you are not in the US) and that particular store and so on.
