Ok. So I'm thinking about asking the question at Christmas, so thought I'd give myself plenty of planning time.

I like the idea of Blue Nile as it sorts of lets you build your own ring, so allows you the put some effort in.

I've done a bit of reserach but its a mind-field.

In terms of the combinations - how does sound as a start?

Your Diamond:
Signature Ideal-cut, G-colour, VS1-clarity, Round, between 0.40 and 0.50-carat Diamond

Your Setting:
Classic Four Claw Engagement Ring in 14k White Gold
Size: F

Can anyone see any issues with this?

The other question I have is that there appears to be a huge jump in terms of cost between 0.40-0.50 carat.

In your opinion, would this jump be worth it in terms of the extra cost? How much bigger is actually 0.10 of a carat?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm a complete novice and was oirginally going to get my GF to pick it but thought I'd at least try!

Thanks,

Have you seen any GIA or AGS diamonds in person? If not, I'd suggest a trip to the jewellery store to look at some G and H stones side by side, face up. If you cannot see the difference, spring for the H to save some money. Secondly, no need for VS1 clarity if you stay with the above mentioned labs. VS2 is perfectly eye clean from all directions. If you drop both stats down from G VS1 to H VS2, you can get a slightly bigger stone for the same amount of money. Some SI1s are also very clean which you may want to consider.

There is no need to stick with Blue Nile for your "all in one" shopping. There are lots of other vendors who offer settings as well, especially if you are interested in a simple 4 prong 14k WG setting. Check out Good Old Gold, Whiteflash, Brian Gavin Diamonds, Engagement Rings Direct and James Allen. All of them are PS recommended vendors who provide outstanding service together with quality diamonds, and also setting services. Use the diamond search function at the top of PS, enter the stats you are looking for, and the database will list all the suitable candidates complete with detailed cut stats, price and vendor's name.

thanks for this - very helpful
