add milgrain?

Hi, all! Thank you for taking time to read my post!

Yesterday, my FI picked up our e-ring, which we had custom made, from our jeweler. The ring is a bypass style with milgrain edges (please see pic below). But when I finally saw the ring, I noticed that the milgrain is missing, even though it was there on the CAD and wax models. Instead, the edges feel unusually sharp (sort of like a knife edge).

I called the jeweler, who told me to just bring the ring in and they can send it out to have one of their goldsmiths 300+ miles away to "add" the milgrain on. I had more questions, but they kept insisting that they have to see the ring first to be able to help me. Sigh.

So now I'm conflicted. It's been a loooong process with this jeweler and I was hoping to finally be done with them. Plus, I'd have to go back to their store at least twice (which is an hour drive each way, plus paying for a toll, paying for parking, and possibly having to miss half a day of work because of their store's limited hours). Buuuut, I really love the look of milgrain and dammit, we paid for it!

So what would you think I should do?

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I love the design of the ring and I feel that the milgrain is really nice on this ring. But it's really personal. It's probably also nice without the milgrain. Could you post a pic so that we can see what it's look like without milgrain?

Your ring is really beautiful! Also, without the milgrain. It's a tough one... I think I would ask for the milgrain anyway for a classic twist. Also, it was your first choice. Now it's more modern but equally nice!! In either case you need to go back: either to get the edges smoothed out or to get the milgrain. Good luck with making your decision!!!

I would absolutely add the milgrain. It's such a classic look. Without it, the ring looks nice but feels like it's missing something.

Another vote for milgrain. It was in your inspiration ring and it looks beautiful. IMO, if you left it as is (also gorgeous in the plain version!!) I know from my own experience, if I 'settle' and don't go for the thing that I really had my heart set on, I'll never feel completely happy w the item. For that reason, I recommend going for the full monty- get what your heart desired right from the start

If you like more of a modern contemporary look I would leave it as is. If you are looking for a more antique look then add the miligrain. it is really all personal preference. I actually sort of like this ring as is.

I think it looks nice either way, but get the milgrain if that's what you really wanted.

If you don't want to bother, then they should refund you a portion of the cost of the ring since you did pay for the milgrain already.

I voted leaving it as it is. I like the modern look it has, but if you like the milgraining and you've paid for it you should get what YOU want!

Another thing though, after wearing my ring for a couple days, I noticed that my finger is swollen all day, then at night, I have to use Windex and a whole lot of twisting and pulling to get it off me. When we were in the process of making the ring, I had requested to increase the ring size by 1/4 size in case my finger swells up from the heat, from exercising, etc. I'll have the jeweler confirm the size when I take the ring in, but I'm fairly certain they forgot to make the change, or worse, they sized down instead of up.

So here's the game plan: since we need to resize the ring and add milgrain, I'll request that they recast the whole thing. If they say no, then I'll demand a refund and take my business elsewhere!!

I think that might be a tad unrealistic. To add miligraining plus having it sized are all finishing details typically. It other words a very quick and easy fix- it would not require a whole new ring to be cast. You can still ask but for something that is typically altered after casting it anyhow- well it just wouldn't make any sense.
