My two .20 c diamonds have come back from the appraiser with "abraded culet", they are planned to be re-set in a 3 stone ring, as sidestones.

I have looked in the search engine, but not much comes up under this term, can anyone explain what this means, will it be a saftey problem for a 4 prong set sides stone, will it interfere with sparkle? I want to reuse my old sidestones for sentimental reasons, but financially I am also keen to reuse them and not get two more stones, when I allready have these two that have done me well for the last 14 or so years.

Can any experts chime in, and explain further. If I find out any further I will post it on here, as I said, I havnt seen much on this topic or is there another term for it?

bottom line, what is it, should I be concerned?
thanks heaps

It''s not a big deal, necessarily: the culet is the smallest facet on the stone, down at the point. It''s pretty much the most vulnerable part of the stone, and sometimes, often, they chip. It might look like a fuzzy white speck at the center of the stone if it was really bad ... but I''m betting you''ll never notice it when the stones are set, especially not with twenty pointers ....

It is not unusual for older diamonds to have abraded culets. You for sure do not want an abraded culet on a new diamond but if you are talking about grandmothers diamonds they may easily have the culet abraided. It is not as bad as a chip but may be more like a nick. All of these terms are from GIA. It seems that only the culet gets abraided. Unless it is badly abraided you will not notice it and using the diamonds on the side of a larger center diamond should be fine.

Thanks for your replies, that is very re-assuring. The stones are part of my original e-ring set, and were set in a 6 prong tiffany replica, low set, so I am surprised the culet got chipped, but as it appears to be no big deal then I am happy. Definately not interested in changing the stones, they have sentimental value, and would only do so if there was a major problem.

Are Maul Stores more likely to sell stones with abraded culets? or is it something that definately must have happend in my 14 odd years of wearing the ring?

thanks again
