Hello all! First time poster long time lurker and reader of the tutorials. Good stuff by the way! I have a few last minute questions to ask before I am off to make my purchase.

1. Should I get an independent Gemologist to appraise my stone? I am purchasing a GIA certified diamond and I can use a loupe well enough to find the inclusions to tell if the diamond matched the cert or not.(or at least I think I can)

2. I don’t have the Pavilion or Crown Angle. Should I get this before purchasing the diamond? It looks good under and Ideal Scope.

3. Should a appraisal show the Crown and Pavilion angles?

4. How much should appraising my diamond cost? It will be loose and I will have the GIA cert with me.

5. Jewelers Mutual, they seem to be good. Anyone have any good or bad dealing with them lately? I have searched the site and they look good to go so far.

I found two stones that I like and need to make a decision between them. Please give your thoughts. I don’t have the crown or pavilion angles for them.

It depends on your appraiser. This requires a special tool called a Sarin to get accurate measurements and not all appraisers have one. The seller of the stone may have access to on and most people find it to be useful information in their decision process.

3. Should a appraisal show the Crown and Pavilion angles?

If you have the information available, yes.
4. How much should appraising my diamond cost? It will be loose and I will have the GIA cert with me.

Most appraisers charge by the hour or by the piece. It seems to range from about $60-$100 for a one item appraisal.

This is the company I use. Chubb, USAA and Firemans Fund are also fairly popular along with the usual companies that offer homeowners policies.

Thanks for the reply Denver. Nice website

The two diamonds you listed are identical in spread (which is what you will see) so you really shouldn't think of it as bigger. Many vendors charge a $$/carat, and since the second one has slightly more weight, it costs slightly more. It is not weight you will see, it's in the depth of the stone, not the diameter.
If you 've seen the stones, I would pick the one that looks better to your eyes in different lighting. The specs you are differentiating them on are not things your eyes will see.

Good point! If they are the same spread then I would think that the 1.02 will win out as it inclustions are moslty to the side it is cheaper and it is F in color. Althought they both looked white to me, untill I put them side by side.

Agreed, based on the specs. But, if you have the chance, let your eyes do the picking. Sometimes one stone just "looks better" to you than another.

I will get to look at them side by side tomorrow. I will also get to look at them both under an Ideal Scope.
