Ok...I am getting engaged soon and want to surprise my girlfriend with a princess cut solitare on a cathedral setting, my budget is about $3K..I've searched online and locally and have found the following:

Diamond Cellar in Columbus Ohio
.90 Carat
H color
SI1 clarity
73% Depth
79% Table
No cullet
Extra Thin to Thick Girdle - This worries me (should it)?
Faint Blue Flourescence
Dimensions: 5.72 X 5.02 X 3.67 - Are these dimensions ok?
$2,185

I told them what I wanted and they didn't have it.....the owner got 2 diamonds from "the diamond cutter" from a batch of diamonds that were 3/4 carats. He sold them to the Diamond Cellar for the 3/4 carat price but they were both around .9 carat. I wanted the diamond certified so they sent it off to GIA and it just came back with this rating - a little better than I thought (expected it to be an I and SI2).

If I get a platinum cathedral for $660 I will stay right around $3K after tax. Should I be concerned about the girdle? They said it will be ok, and of course if I have any problems with it they will fix everything. Are the dimensions ok? I know its not exactly square.

I appreciate all input b/c I am in no ways an expert. I don't know much, my girlfriend doesn't know anything about diamonds, I just want a nice looking ring for a decent price. Oh and I like Platinum better than White Gold because it is so much heavier.

Thanks

I am not an expert either but I love princesses. An extremely thin girdle would worry me on a princess where so much of it is exposed and due to the corners being as vulnerable as they are. Someone please correct me is I'm wrong on this.

Also the table is quite large. Ideally it should be smaller than the depth. The length/width differential is really a matter of preference. Some people don't mind a slightly rectangular princess while others (like me) would.

Should I stay away from this??? Seeing that I am buying it locally, if the diamond comes loose, the jewelry store is responsible....The Depth and table are about 5% apart (I hear that it is good for the table to be 5% more than depth).

Thanks again for any input.

There was a recent post here with some great princess information.

hello!
i dont know that much about princess cuts, but this was just my thought...the girdle says extra thin to very thick...usually you would want to stay away from such extremes.. and i too have heard that very thin girdle in a princess is something to be wary of. i know the jeweler means well when they say they will fix any problems down the line..but if the thin girdle is chipped down the line..there isnt much they can do save replace the stone.. IMHO... good luck!

Does an extra thin to thick girdle affect the diamond's appearance? Also are these table and depths a red flag for a princess cut? Is this diamond a bargain?

Thanks
