Here is a great example of a wonderful looking old mine cut cushion set in a hand made platinum bezel with a yellow gold shank. It looked to me to be an authentic old piece of jewelry and the diamond looked to be just about 10 carats in size, nearly 13.4mm in lenght and width. Note the pretty pierced work on the sides of the bezel. This is all cut by hand or formed and soldered individually when making this kind of shaped setting. You might use this as an example when you are thinking about how to mount your own diamond.

wow that is a nice antique ring. :appl:

Dave, I need to get my smelling salts!!! That is the PERFECT omc ring (for me at least)! Stone is protected from chipping, beautiful gallery, and a mix of metals! I sure hope Santa has the right address for me, because I'm simplifying my list to include only this piece!! :naughty:

that is a stunning piece. thank you for sharing :)

Thanks for the inspiration!

Gorgeous! How old is the setting?

Wow.
So beautiful and fine.

I want it.

You're too slow, Juney! I called dibs!

Why do I sound like my children?

That is a beautiful piece!

10 carats of OMC= OMG I want one!

What a special ring! The diamond is phenomenal but I especially *love* all the detail work. Swoon!

Oh, I love this ring. So much.

Trade ya Old Miner! Mine for yours! :naughty:

Dave,

Very nice piece and well photographed.
What information led you to conclude the setting was truly old?

The ring had a known series of owners. The degree of finish was up to the standards in place at the turn of the century 1900-1920 era. More than likely, this was a remount of a diamond that had been set in some other way before. It may well have been improved in cut quality before it was set into this mounting as the symmery was better than most old cut cushions.

Nothing would prevent the entire item from being made today and the stone could have been cut last week, but the facts in this case dictated otherwise. It was only lightly used as it shows very little wear.

Dave,

Thanks for the update, must be fun handling such a valuable piece with a known pedigree.

Handling a major rock always makes a diamond guy feel better. It is so pretty, so durable, so valuable and desirable that one has to just feel kind of lucky to have it in their hands for a time. A major reason I posted the photos is that vendors always need new or forgotten old styles to make different engagement ring mountings that consumers would consider practical and wearable.

Absolutely beautiful! Thanks for posting it.

It's history in your very hands and that is a beautiful thing.

anyone else wish they knew the series of "known owners". It is stunning!

Very beautiful indeed. . . what is your opinion of the color of the stone?
