A little break from politics...

OMG
So cute!

Adorable!!!! Thank you for the much need break.

I don't just "like" them, I love them..OMG, Cordon Bleu :)

Cute!

Darling. Are they finches? Please excuse my ignorance. I am only a dog person except that my daughter had two canaries and some "Siamese fighting fish" (I do not recall what they are actually called) when she was little. But these lived at her grandparents' house and her grandmother cared for them. (Both the canaries-they were sequential-were named "Golden", by the way.)

I did learn that birds had little personalities from our canary experience, though.

Hi Deb! They are chickens. But BABY chickens! I LOVE birds. All birds! I would love a canary. My husband would kill me. I have 5 full grown chickens and now more chicks. I house bluebirds as well....

Cute little peeps with cute little peep feets. Please tell me they will be used to contain garden pests and not be used in a fricassee.

These are our family pets. 2 of us are allergic to dogs and cats and this is our compromise. I could NEVER kill my babies. Even roosters! We lost one of our girls to a hawk a few months back. I literally cried for a week:(

I told you I was ignorant, soxfan! Trust me not to know a chicken when I see one! Cute as pie. I envy you holding them.

My best friend had a chicken she got as a chick at The Maine County (or Country?) Fair one year. She called her Miss Peepers. Since my friend had many dogs (they ranged in number over the years, but were often at about ten at once) plus several cats, Miss Peepers had her own crate/cage. She only weighed about a pound or a pound and a half, but she lived to be 16. One of the Malamutes was terrified of her and wouldn't walk by her crate. (But he is a very neurotic dog.) Here is a photo of Miss Peepers and one of my friend's two Malamutes.

Adorable!!

Gah, so cute! Our neighbor had a few that wandered over in our yard a few times...They were pretty
shy though and wouldnt let you get close.

You need a baby duck to go with them!

That is the sweetest video ever!!!!

Soxfan, I wish you lived near me. There are many baby ducks in my backyard every spring/summer. They are so sweet.

Hi Soxfan, those two are soooooo adorable!!
I hope you don't mind a mini threadjack, but I am looking into buying two chickens as pets for our family as well. Unfortunately though, most breeders don't get the idea at all and therefore pretty much stared at me in disbelief, when I asked my questions:
How old is the ideal age to get them? I'd obviously like them to be attached to us, but don't want to cause any harm to them (most breeders don't really "get" that...
Can you just let them out into the garden (ours is fenced at 4ft 25 and about 3/4 of an acre with about 1/2 woods and shrubs, so nice hiding places for them (sorry if my measurements read weird, I am on the metric system usually). Or do were need a smaller designated space with a higher fence?
Will they usually come back into their chicken house for food in the evening, or will this be a problem? We have a natural water basin and lots of shade as well as sandy patch and about 1/3 very sunny lawn. So I thought this might be a really nice place for the chickens overall...
thanks, k

Hi Kipari- thread jack away! I love talking chickens:) You sound like you have a spot that will be heaven for chickens! Ideal age to get them is a few days old IF you have a large coop and are willing to raise them. Where you are just looking for two chickens, are you looking to raise them yourself or would you like to acquire a pair from someone looking to rehome them? Also, where you live, I can help you find some.

If they are older and have free ranged, they will come back into the coop at night with no problem. If you raise them as chicks, leave them in the run/coop for a few days and then let them out- they will know where their coop is. Chickens are instinctual and will seek shelter when the sun starts to go down. Your fence height is fine. The sandy patch is perfect for dust-bathing. Chickens are happiest when they can free-range. Predators are always a problem, though. You have to know what predators you have around. I have hawks. Lost a girl around Thanksgiving to one:(

Let me know if you have any more questions or if I can help!

Thanks so much soxfan! I'll check about predators (there are the neighbourhood cats and dogs, but I am not sure about birds of prey or foxes/badgers/martens). I am sorry for your loss. We are in a village that is still in the 'burbs of a major city.. I will ask the locals.
I am open to all options and although the kids would LOVE two cute babies, I might prefer going the rescue route. I am in Europe , though...

join backyard chickens!

Thanks for the suggestion!!Off to read the chicken 101 :read:

This has to be one of the last things I anticipated seeing when I opened this thread, but my goodness, how stinkin' cute are they??
