Hello,

I am in need of a jeweler who can set cheaper stones in premanufactered standard size settings for a reasonable fee. I need to find someone who can use standard size settings of good quality (the stones are of good quality) and put them in there so they will not fall out or get cracked or anything like that. Does anyone know of someone who could do this type of work for a reasonable fee? I hope you can help me out as this is my first post here.

Thanks,

The first place I would look is locally to you if at all possible. It is good to find someone you can trust for minor work such as resizing, cleaning, rhodium dipping, checking prongs and more. Make sure the jeweller has an in-house bench (most likely a mom and pop style store, not a chain store) and has example work with coloured stones that he/she can show you. The jeweller can order settings from Stuller, Adwar, or anyone else and set the stone for you. This will work better in the long run to save on shipping costs.

I will look locally, but I doubt there is anyone near me, so I will probably end up shipping it anyway. Can you give me any more information? How much should it cost to set a stone in a calibrated setting? Are the ones you mentioned the best ones? Thanks again!

Some people buy Chinese or US manufactured settings on eBay, then have their local jeweller set their stones.

Some go custom with Etsy. I'm not sure if the Etsy vendors are open to ordering from Stuller, Adwar and the like since they make their own settings.

Setting stones is very easy if the setting is of good quality AND the stones are properly sized for the setting. If BOTH of these things are accomplished then any jeweler will do the setting work for a reasonable fee, (reasonable depends, of course, on where they are located, if they have an employee doing the work, etc., etc.....you probably won't get "reasonable" in Beverly Hills for instance). Now comes the questions. Are you providing both the stones AND the settings? If so then expect the costs for setting to go up, (maybe WAY up if things don't match up well or the settings OR stones are junky). Are you providing well cut and sized stones and letting the jeweler make some money on the settings? If so then you can expect the setting costs to be as low as FREE, (quite a deal, but many jewelers will do this since they make enough on the settings and want you to come back).

If you are thinking of diamond melee, then please, have a heart and let the jeweler get these for you. Too many times people get a "deal" on small diamonds and when one tries to set them, finds that they vary in size and quality so much as to be nearly worthless.
