Martin Sheffield Stone Reccomendation Feedback

I have been talking to Martin Sheffield for a few days, and he has recommended a stone that I am a little unsure about based on what I have read on here.

It is a .79ct G VS2 GIA 3X stone with an HCA score of 1.4
Crown angle: 32*
Pavilion angle: 41*
Table: 60%
Depth: 59%

In the picture and video he sent, it looks nice, but the angles and such seem a little off from what I have seen recommended. The crown angle and table seem the most troublesome, but I am far from an expert, and definitely is, so perhaps its nothing to worry about. Should I accept his suggestion based on his expertise or ask for another suggestion? Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.

Ask to see an ASET or Idealscope of the stone.

This stone would probably not be acceptable to regular PS members. However, I believe there are some members who have stones similar to
these numbers and they like them just fine. Got them before they were on PS. Can you tell him the parameters you want to stay within?
Crown - 34-35 degrees
pavilion 40.6-41
depth 60-62.3
table 54-58

34 pairs better with 41 pavilion and vice versa (35 with 40.6).

FYI...here are some stones with the same numbers. Crown and pavilion are averaged over 8 angles so of course these stones will not be exactly
like the one you are looking at.

Numbers look promising but without pictures hard to say.

The 0.79 put forward sounds like a 60/60 stone - so (if I understand things correctly) it will have a larger spread (diameter) but deliver more white light return than coloured fire.

Such a stone is not necessarily 'wrong' - it is personal preference whether one prefers while light sparkle or coloured fire. As long as the angles work (and the HCA score under 2 indicates they will) it would likely still be a good stone in terms of not being leaky and therefore having decent light performance, but it would be a different look to, say, a high crown (35degrees) and small table (54%) stone.

Have you expressed a preference to Martin Sheffield with regards to the sort of 'flavour' of diamond you like? e.g. lots of white light sparkles rather than fewer, broader flashes of coloured fire?

Here are some other choices with proportions that we typically recommend:

.8 H VS2 $3,075.07 34.5/40.8/55/62 - cert is from 2013

Thanks for those reccommendations! The .83ct looks like a pretty solid contender. I'll see what other info he can give me about it

The GIA report lists an IGI inscription number, so I did a report check. The IGI certificate doesn't show where the crystal is either.

http://www.igi.org/verify.php?r=3060843U

When IGI inspected it in 2004 it was a G SI1 and was in a white gold ring and set in platinum.

Thats interesting. Does that raise any red flags or is it just an interesting tidbit about the history of the diamond?

Interesting. Looks like IGI “graded” it while mounted which to me indicates that it likely was a stone that may have gone to one of the mainstream mall jewellers as a set piece. Interesting that now it is unmounted, GIA has graded it more colourless than before...

Hi,

Im new to PS looking to find a 1.5 carat round, based on your response it seems like you know a hell of a lot! So, Is GIA Triple XXX not good enough, how far off are the variances of that kind of stone vs. a perfect one you would go for? What are "acceptable stones for PS members? I came across PS while looking for an engagement ring and now I really do want her to have the best diamond possible...What would you say the best way to go about it is...I'm working with an $8k budget, will that fly?

Hi Jacob Cohen
Welcome to PS! We'd be happy to help you but could you start a new thread (with your above info) so we dont get things confused with what zsmith
is looking for? There are lots of qualified PSers. We'll point you in the right direction. But, to give you a start, no XXX is not good enough. It is too
broad and includes stones that are not well cut by PS standards.

See you over on your thread,

That would be a tough task. What color and clarity are you looking for?

Just an update for everyone, I'm moving forward with Martin on a .80ct H VS1 (probably overkill in the clarity department, but it is still within budget so I'll take it) GIA 3X with 34/40.8 crown/pavilion and 55/61.9 table/depth. I'll update again when I get the stone and get it set.

Those proportions should land you in AGS ideal territory. Looking forward to seeing pics.

Here are a couple bad pictures. I didn't realize how hard it is to photograph diamonds. I'll try to get better pics when I pick it up from the jeweler today.

I tried to take a few more pictures, not many came out, but you can sort of make out the arrows in this one. I'll update again with on hand shots after the big day
