Do Cartier watches need to be wound?

im thinking of getting DH a Cartier watch for his birthday. We are the same— sometimes we wear watches and sometimes we don’t. He mostly wears an Apple Watch, so I’m not sure this is even a good purchase for him.

I definitely want to avoid anything that needs a watch winder. (Those machines)

Thoughts?

My Cartier Santos automatic will run overnight but it needs to replenish its reserve the next day or it'll stop. So it needs to be worn daily or kept in a watch winder. I believe some Cartier watches have quartz movements with battery that lasts for couple of years.

I can't see a person who wears an Apple watch switch to an analog one unless it's for a special occasion. The daily usage is so different.

Most auto watches will have a power reserve for about 40 hrs when fully winded. IOW, it can run for 40 hrs w/o being wind or worn on a wrist. If I am wearing my manual wind watch I'd do wind it every morning even though it can run 72 hrs w/o winding.

Quartz watch for men? ...one thing to keep in mind is that if he ever decided to sell it he couldn't get much for the watch no matter the brand, but you can haggle a big discount when you buy a quartz watch.

Yes, this would be for dress wear.

He is a surgical specialist so the Apple Watch does so much for him. I’m sort of talking myself out of a watch now.

There are dressy bands for special occasions. A PS vendor can probably do a nice blingy one if he's into that for dress wear.

The Cartier women's watches come in quartz and automatic (I havent looked at the men's, but you can look on their site and see. I chose quartz on purpose because I only wear my watch a couple of times a month max, and automatics really need to be worn daily. The fact is, the quartz are more accurate, so I just don't have the patience to deal with automatic.

I would think a Cartier would be nice as a dress watch, unless you think he'd want to wear the Aple watch even to dressy events.

Ok so do they have a certified pre owned program or any tips and tricks for nice prices?

I have zero issues with getting a mint pre owned watch.

Thanks.

Oh and yes, lol, all the docs wear Apple watches everywhere. But you can’t hand those down etc

DF would be the expert on second hand sources. I lucked out and got a jewelry store gift card for 25% off on a black Friday, and they were an authorized dealer of Cartier watches. So I was extremely lucky to get one 25% off. They haven't done that again, unfortunately.

I think I'd run it by him before you go any farther, because he really might not want to be without the Apple watch anytime.

Very good advice.

I would second asking him what he wants - personal taste is very much a thing with watches!

For example, I cannot stand chronograph watches, even in any given 'label' name, so I am extremely fussy... lol

If he won't wear it very often, though, and you/he does not want a watchwinder going each day, I think a manual / handwind model is a great idea. Quick and easy to set the time, usually don't have date complications to faff around setting, and I feel it helps create a 'bond' with a watch, as one nurtures it into life with each turn of the crown :)

Stupid question...I don't wear my watches daily and I just wind it when I want to wear it, is this bad for my watches? I always thought that the watch winder was more of a convenience than a requirement, am I wrong?

Personally, I never wind my automatic watches, as I just think it adds extra stress that isn't strictly needed!

Usually I set the time and date (taking care to avoid setting the date with the time anywhere after 6 o'clock, as some mechanisms can/will be damaged by changing the date if its already changing itself) and then place the watch face down in my palm and 'swirl' it anti-clockwise (IIRC lol). This gets the rotor rotating and winding the watch enough to start it up, then you can just strap it on and wear it, letting it wind itself :)

We went and looked at watches today with me telling him I wanted to see how large or small a woman’s Cartier tank is on my arm.

The place we went to only has Cartier in the downtown location, but he did have one ladies tank solo with leather band for another customer. DH liked the Cartier overall look, especially the Roman numerals.

He did like the newer Rolexes—the Milgauss model.

Oh, he lost his Apple Watch. With his brother dying, etc, it’s either in this house or the other one and the battery is dead. It will turn up sooner or later or I may be getting him a new Apple Watch lol

Speaking of Apple watches, anyone seen the new Hermes version? I thought it was cute until I saw the price tag $1249, no thank you!

I found one! 30k

Rose gold, diamonds, purple strap
I'm glad you found one you liked! :)

I am increasingly liking rose gold - I still think YG is a bit gaudy  lol, but the warmth of RG is lovely :)

There is, of course, a lot of 'aspirational pricing' in any luxury brand goods, but if you are aware of that and comfortable with it (and are in the financial situation where it's not an issue) then enjoy the freedom of being able to buy what you love! :))

I'm sure @Dancing Fire will be along shortly to confirm it looks good!

Oh!!! Lol I was joking. I mean, I do love the watch, but 30k isn’t even in my fantasies! 8-)

Fair enough - my sarcasm/irony/reading-between-the-lines sensors are a bit broken at the moment!
