Diamond Studs different mm sizes side by side

In my attempt to decide what size diamond studs to upgrade to I've been searching all over Pricescope for a way to compare different sizes of diamond studs. We all have different ear lobe sizes and what looks very large on one person looks modest on another. Well cut studs always look better than poorly cut studs. So I am starting a thread that has side by side photos of different mm sizes of studs.

@MichelleCarmen posted these "WF ACA F SIs .82 ctw (set in WG) and the other pair, I'm not sure about the specs except they're .50 ctw (set in platinum)." From the WF site, WF ACA are 4.75 mm, so her larger stones are about 1mm larger than her smaller stones, depending on the cut quality of the small stones.

@LawmaLlama posted a comparison shot of her "1 ctw J-VS1 AGS 0 studs from GOG in 18k white gold, Stuller 4 prong martinis with la pousette backs. I included comparison shots with my 0.5 ctw mutt studs"

Her small studs are about 3.75 mm and her 1 cttw well cut studs are about 5.11 mm. So her new stones are about 1.35 mm larger. BIG impact.

@aljdewey posted her .55 studs and her .16 studs I don't know if this was Total Ct weight or the weight of each stone. Maybe she can let us know.

This is a very helpful thread! Thanks for starting it.

I often get perplexed on ct weight for studs and it’s hard to figure out not knowing the size of the pictures ear. When you list ct weight, is it total (for both), or each individual stud?

So..... 30 ctw..... is it 15 ct per stud or 60 ct for both?

Thanks!

@Lynn B "And for size comparison sake... here''s the (new) .74 next to the (old) .45 next to my "Baby Bling" (a killer little .17)..." This is the individual diamond weight. Her .74 stone is 5.8 mm. Per the Whiteflash site a .45 stone should be about 4.9 mm. So this is about a .9 mm difference!
Very visible! They didn't have any .17 stones for me to check on it's mm.

Love this thread idea!!
Earrings are my favourite type of jewellery.
Studs are my favourite type of earring.
I'm bookmarking this one ::)

I think if it says "1 ctw" or "1ct tw" it should be for both - so 0.5ct each. Just "1ct" without any additional info could be either though!

Well, in normal-person communication. Many vendors on ebay seem to either be unable to add or to consider hypothetical diamond dust in the air as contributing to their offerings :lol-2:

@yssie "0.1ctw vs 0.86ctw" The 0.86 is TOTAL ct weight. Each larger stone should be about 4.80 mm.

THANKS @LittleRed and @yssie ! This whole search on PS is driving me batty because sometimes people don't mean the TOTAL ct weight and sometimes they do. And my ears are totally different than theirs, so MM size comparison is what I need.

@D&T "and for size reference, the bezel on the right was .25ctw (so .125ct ish each)" So .30 ct individual stone vs .125 ct individual stone. So the left stone is about 4mm.

Some real variables here with the halo and one being an ACA. The ACA should be about 4.8 mm and the larger pendant stone about 5.35 mm. But of course the larger stone could be spready since we don't know about it's cut.

@bleeblue "Hi, here is a comparison photos of a 0.41 wf ACA next to the BGD halo studs next to a 0.55ct pendant."

I just thought that people may be interested to know

@Andelain posted these three studs. "the stones closest to my face are .34 cts each G-SI1 BGD's. The stones in the middle are about .12ct each G-SI1 WF's. The outermost stones are CZ'a around 2 mm each.

Left to right 4.5 mm, unknown, 2mm
Left to right .34 cts, .12 cts

Not the greatest side-by-side pics (and I can't retake because the smaller pair were sent back to WF for upgrading), but .66ctw vs. 1.33ctw WF J/SV2 ACAs in identical settings (8-prong YG martini)

.66ctw is on the lobe (so .33 carats) (the other one is a .75ct non-ideal)
earring.jpg

and now: 1.33ctw, or .66 carats

Earrings are usually sold as total carat weight.
And remember to consider diamond size difference as a % difference. So the increase in size between a .50 and a 1 carat looks considerably visually bigger than the difference between a 1 carat and a 1.5 carat.

SUPER sparkle going on here! LOVE the bottom one on you, I'm just not sure I have enough ear lobe for it.

So the bottom photo (only one stone) shows one of a 1.33 total carat weight set of ACA earrings? So it's .66 ct by itself and about 5.5 mm?

Yes I am trying to shop by mm size in a world where listings are by carat weight. That's why I am going a bit crazy. It's the mm size that really matters to me, on a well cut stone. Your point about % difference is important too. I just can't wrap my mind around that as easily.

@dsm42 .44 ct stone on the left and a .90 ct stone on the right (J/SI1)
So 4.8 mm on the left and 6.2 mm on the right
Great second photo showing the settings.

@Luce 1.5tcw and .30 single stone
So .75 about 5.8mm and .30 about 4mm 1.8 mm is a big difference!

@artdecogirl "BGD baby bezels .41 tcw , love them and have barely taken them out and my martinis from years ago .98 tw"

About 3mm plus bezel and about 5.11 mm martinis.
I took the liberty of flipping and cropping her photo.

@ZestfullyBling "smaller pair is .61 ctw and larger is 1.24 ctw"
A nice size combo!

So lower is .60 ct about 5.2 mm and upper is .30 ct about 4.2 mm

@raindrops on roses "Here is my new pair of 0.72ctw WF ACA studs (H/I color). In the last photo, I'm wearing them with a smaller pair of pre-set studs (0.25ctw) from James Allen."

Again in this size a 1.5 mm difference is very visible!

Lower piercing is .36 ct about 4.5 mm upper piercing is .12 ct about 3 mm.

Can you explain a bit more @Bron357 I just can’t quite get my head around that-I’ve just bought a little over .8ctw

I want to play! The larger ones are 1.80 ctw (so 0.90 each) GIA “excellent” J SI1s from IDJ, with an average diameter of 6.12 - 6.16 mm (I think they are a little deep but they are very sparkly and were a great price) and the smaller ones are 0.82 ctw (one is 0.405 and one is 0.415) AGS J VS2 and I SI1 with an average diameter of 4.76-4.80 mm from the BGD signature H&A line. All are extremely dirty and the BGD ones are missing the backs .
