60 minutes - Emeralds on the ocean floor

I saw it - can you believe the color of some of those stones? Beautiful, beautiful!

We have it on DVR and haven't reached that part yet. Saw the bags of emeralds during the preview - can't wait to see the segment.

Wow! Maybe I need to start doing some ocean floor exploration, see what I can find :naughty: Haha.

 Just finished watching. Made me want to go diving!

Very cool segment. What a beautiful treasure!

Poor guy..can you imagine finding that and have your hands tied and not be able to sell it???

Very cool - thank for the link, maebelle. I do wish the 60 Minutes team had given the emeralds more camera time, though!

Maebelle: thanks for this. I had no idea that there had been such a discovery. Interesting that there was treatment found on some of them. Makes me think they were jettisoned from some smugglers or something...I hope they don't come after him!

I know that this is an incredible story, but I have my doubts. Too good to be true strikes me to mind. Good quality emerald rough is rare enough that I don't understand how they can find laundry baskets on the ocean floor. But if it is true, maybe I can finally afford a nice honking emerald ring!

Hi,

Since the emeralds had modern day treatment, I postulate they were dropped from a plane, not from a pirate ship. I feel for the treasure hunter. Nice find, though.

Makes sense. Maybe the epoxy was just an experiment to see what the color would look like after treatment?

The Emeralds have been confirmed as real and only a couple seem to have epoxy, so the idea that some people had on the show that it was a hoax.... Why would someone buy baskets and baskets of emerald rough, drop it to the ocean floor, and then pretend to find them only to have said rough tied up in litigation for years?

I think I'd just put one of those uncut on a ring!
