I was trying to find similar topics and could not.
I like six prongs Tiffany setting. I am not interested in engagement ring per se, but in setting itself.
By looking at the other site, I found out the prices for engagement types of setting are pretty much in the $800-$2000 and more range.
I looked at Blue nile website and I wonder, what makes the cost so different.
I would really appreciate to hear all kind of opinions.
The gold weight is not mentioned on the picture. Part of the ring cost comes from design, gold (platinum) weight, type of vendor, quality etc. The cost of platinum and gold is very close now.
1 - Petite Nouveau Solitaire Engagement Ring in Platinum $880 - 1.85 mm width

2 - Classic Six Prong Engagement Ring in Platinum $520 - 2 mm width

3 - Classic Six Prong Engagement Ring in 14k White Gold $170 - 2mm

4 - NEW Six-Prong Nouveau Knife Edge Solitaire Engagement Ring in Platinum $ 890 - 2.2 mm width

5 - NEW Six-Prong Nouveau Knife Edge Solitaire Engagement Ring in 14k White Gold $445

Thanks!

Even though the cost of platinum and gold are closer now, platinum is heavier and weighs more per ounce. Platinum jewelry is usually 90-95% pure platinum whereas gold jewelry is 58.3% if 14K and 75% if 18K. Therefore, the same style will still cost more in platinum than in gold.

Thanks! It explains some price and weight difference. But the other part fill with other metals (14K and 18 K).
I am wondering if anybody could say what is different between these rings. They are approximately the same style, the same width. With each presented ring price double or triple. What change significantly in them?
I've read that engagement settings are described by being more heavy than average band. Is it true?

You could always call and ask them. I know James Allen offers two versions of the Tiffany settings, one is significantly more than the other because it is "handcrafted."

Could you describe the difference?
I looked at his earrings settings and they are beautiful.

Handmade vs machine-made is what it implies. You can always call them and ask!

:twirl: funny! i knew this.
My guess it here the ring under $200 weigh less than 2 gr, probably thin. The higher priced are more heavy.

Another thing I found out you can't purchase most of the settings without diamonds... Bummer...

Just looking at the different settings, while all are similar with 6 prongs, the flow of the shank/band/head and the finish are all far more refined in appearance with the higher priced settings. While that may or may not be of interest to you (or many others), I think the quality is reflected in their price structure.

The less costly ones are still appealing, but the finish seems better as the price increases.

Thank you Enerchi,
I was getting it...
I find it hard in my mind to think that just the plain setting would cost 1K. Getting used to the idea
Brian Gavin has some incredible looking beauties!

This is so true! There are so many "6-prong" settings, but if you compare some of the less expensive with the pricier designs, it is very easy to see a difference in quality between them.

The first stone I had chosen for my e-ring was set in a "non-branded" six-prong setting with a knife edge band. It was in 18K white gold and felt really light and flimsy. Then, I discovered PS and found other designer settings, such as the Vatche U-113. Even in gold, the Vatche was much heavier, had cleaner lines, and better flow than the other ring. It felt so luxurious! For a simpler setting such as this, I would personally want a heavier piece, maybe in platinum.

I have 6-7 mm stone, close to round shape which I want to set in 6-prong setting.
I am looking at Tiffany style ER, because it is basically the ring style I want for this stone.
Somebody mentioned that whiteflash quality would be better. Could you look at this two items and state your opinion.
If you have Otto Frei setting, could you share your opinion too? Thank you!

http://www.stuller.com/products/170309/17590/?groupId=8226
The last one is Stuller, I found a different one, but the jeweller said it was not available, so this one. I don't like comfort fit. Anything wide hurt me.
Otto Frei is 100 dollars cheaper. The stuller and whiteflash are the same in price, but stuller price include work (setting stone, sizing).
