I''d like to start my post with a quick "thank-you" shout out. Thank you to all of you loyal Pricescopers for your well-educated and charitable advice. It''s websites like these that really help "cut" through all of the fluff and static. Many of the snakes behind jewelry marketing and sales can really sidetrack well-intentioned, yet impulsive diamond purchases like myself into rushing into a decision. If I had not stumbled upon the wealth of information found in the archives of these forums, I would probably be presenting my bride-to-be with a less than stellar stone with a more than appropriate price tag. That said, I still feel like a novice in the search...and the little introductory knowledge I have learned has really only succeeded in illuminating all of the risks involved in the process.

I would really appreciate your help in getting the best bang for my buck for an engagement ring.

Here''s my scenario:

I can spend 5000 dollars.

My girfriend and I have dated for about 4 years. We talk about marriage and we''re actually closing on a home in the next few weeks. Needless to say...the ball is in my hands, no timeouts- everybody knows I''m going to shoot. She has bashfully refused to be involved in the diamond search (she says it''s supposed to be a complete surprise...and promised that anything I pick will be sufficient). Even though I have been sent on the ride alone and with complete confidence, she has provided training wheels in the form of basic admissions of preference and a description of the "perfect ring".

Description:

Round Stone
A band with tiny individually set/pronged diamonds on the band (these don''t have to run around the entire ring)
Size 6
White Gold is fine

This may not be much to go on, and I''ll be free to provide more of my limited knowledge if that helps with advice. As always...it''s much appreciated. I''m anxious to see what you guys and gals come up with.

Thanks!

you can get something really nice for $5K, so here''s my advice- one noobie guy to another!
I was in a similar situation (got the ring but haven''t popped the question yet)

check out my posts for my g/f''s ring pics and advice I got from PS regulars.
I got my ring from JamesAllen.com and they gave me a PS discount if you ask for it. Other internet shops do too. (this is valuable because you could get a slightly

I decided to get the diamond & ring and have them send it to me all ready to go. I didn''t want a loose diamond, only to have it go out of my sight for the ring mounting! Being a total noobie, I figured the less steps, the better for me!

Here is how I decided:

1. cut: look for "ideal" cut stones. This will make the diamond look ''sparkly''. Hearts & Arrows is the "super-ideal" cut.
2. color: the G,H, I, J seem to be the best value without looking yellow. (this is the "near colorless" range of diamonds)
3. clarity: VS1,VS2,SI1 is the lowest you should go I think. Ask if it is "eye clean". Even with my noobie eye, I can see defects in diamonds with lower quality.
4. carat weight: I bet you can get something in a 1-1.5 carat round diamond range. That will be nice. I didn''t even know what a carat stone looked like before I started... but I think it seems to be a classic size.

After I got the diamond, I had it appraised to verify it was, in fact, the diamond described and all the C''s matched. Also, for insurance & to verify if I got a good deal ;)

Hello, and welcome to Pricescope! You received more input that a lot of guys on here, so I''m sure you''ll have no problem picking out a wonderful ring.

Here is a nice shared prong setting from Whiteflash.

If you''re willing to put a little more money into the setting, the Harmony has a beautiful fishtail pave shank for a more delicate look.

These two diamonds fit in your budget:

I would think you could get a very nice .75 to 1 ct stone in a solitaire ring that has small diamonds around it. I''ve been shopping .75 ct rouinds and there are very nice ones around $2000-2500 in H SI1 with nice cuts. So you could definitely go bigger. But my limited experience says go for the fire and sparkle, so get a good cut! I''ll let the experts, MRSSALVO Sparkalicious, strmrdr, etc help you on the ring. I''d check out all the usual suspects, BlueNile, WF, GOG and exceldiamonds.com. Excel seems to have a nice selection of rings.

MRSSALVO - In case you see this. I want to thank you for your suggestions on a two row eternity. I''m getting quotes from WF. QuestJewelery. Hope to pull the trigger soon.

OK, how about this:

White Flash white gold Legato for $895
or Diamonds for an Eternity for $1175

1.07 J SI1 GIA excellent stone for $3814
or 0.811 G VS2 A Cut Above for $3658

(When searching for stones, I always use the PriceScope search by cut search engine because then you see what the discounted price for finding it through PS is--be sure to mention this when purchasing).

What's nice about White Flash is that you can always upgrade the stone (for your full purchase cost minus shipping I believe) if one day she says, Honey, my heart's desire is a 1.5 or whatever carat stone!

P.S. Congrats on the home purchase! That is such a fun time!

I think you have a great set of guidelines in place to be able to pick a ring you both will love! It's awesome that you have the shape and setting suggestions in place.

I came up with this on the fly.

Setting:

Diamond:

Not sure about your color sensitivity, but if it were ME, I'd love this ring!

ETA: Sorry! I started my response, had to step away for a bit, then came back and finished and see that I repeated some things others already suggested.

I'm going to echo those who posted the WF Legato w/Micro pave and that 1.07 J. That's the exact setting I would have posted if it hadn't been already. Yummy!

I would adore the Jen5504 combo!!

My e-ring is the legato with micropave from WF and I love it! Also, the diamonds dont go all the way around so it can easily be resized if needed.

Thank you for all of the input! I''ll be sure to keep everyone posted on the outcome and share some pictures of the final product when I finally pull the trigger.
