For the last 5 years of my life, since discovering PS and another similar diamond site, my goal was to get a 2+ carat H&A RB. Then I had a revelation last Friday at dinner…..I don’t want a round cut, and ideal H&A rounds didn’t take my breath away like I thought it would. In the past 3 months, my uncle (husband of my late aunt who passed away 3 years ago), and both his sons got engaged. Thanks to my direction, they did their research on PS, and 2 of them purchased H&A Round brilliants from a VERY reputable vendor here (both stones were in the 1.25 ct range, E, F color respectively), while the third purchased a non-H&A but AGS 0 from another vendor ~1.70ct F round brilliant. I saw all their rings for the first time last Friday, and I have to admit….I was not WOWED. They all chose beautiful custom settings in antique styles which showcased the stones really well. None of them were in cheap, plain settings, but STILL I was not blown away.
Then I asked one of my cousin’s fiancée’s to see her ring up close. She handed me her ring (1 ¼ ct, and E color like my princess), and I put it on my pinky next to my ring finger, next to my princess cut. Then it hit me, I don’t like the tight “specs” of an ideal H&A, I found the table too small, I used to have an RB with 60/60 proportions, and I like that better. I also didn’t like the disco ball affect of the idea H&A. I found that while it shot beautiful rainbow colors around the room I preferred the tiny shattered-glass look of my princess cut. It was like comparing a rainbow to lightning. Everyone loves to see rainbows, but I’m a lightning type of gal. I think the starburst look of the princess facets really made the center of my stone look more interesting. Maybe because I was surrounded by 3 RBs, and my princess stood out, and I’m the type who likes to stand out….but I’m going to have to think long and hard about my 2+ carat upgrade….Something like Researcher’s 3ct princess is beginning to look more and more like what I’m going to strive for.
I''d love to hear about what other fancy-cut lovers like about their special cuts.......I think I could be persuaded to get a nice juicy pear or oval too!
