Hi All,

I was wondering if some people are of the opinion that a 6 prong setting can make your solitare bigger?

I sometimes think a 4 prong can give a RB solitare a square-ish apprearance. What do you guys think? Does anyone have pics of a RB set in both a 4 prong and 6 prong setting by any chance?

Thanks !!

Ah ohw weird I have just spent the last month having this debate with myself (!) I currently have a 6 prong setting on my .65 RB WG solitaire but I always felt that all the prongs sort of hid my stone, its not the biggest but it is beautiful quality very fiery. Anyway I took it to my jeweller who knew what I meant and let me try on tons of different solitaires so I could see which I preferred and I have ended up going for a 4 prong platinum setting but with fine prongs as I feel this will really show my stone off.

I think when you have a lovely big stone it probably makes less of a difference as there is more rock to look at but for me I am hoping (fingers crossed) that my new 4 prong setting will be perfect

RHL look up pictures of my ring and of Deelight's... we have almost identical size stones, and both are set in simple Leon Mege solitaire settings, but where mine is a 4 prong hers is a 6 prong

FWIW I do think a 6 prong setting makes the diamond look a smidge bigger but it is a different look, there is slightly more metal to it. It's a matter entirely of personal preference in the end!

Thanks a mill Delster, that was exactly what I was looking for. One quick question, did you order/design and collect your ring from the states or were you living in the states whenyou got engaged?

If you bought online, would you recommend going to the states for a e-ring? Thanks!

FI bought the stone from Wink and then worked with Leon to design the ring, and we went over together to collect it. It all went completely smoothly, no hitches or nasty surprises at any stage.

Obviously enough as that''s what we did, I think going to the States is definitely a good option!

But you may find this thread interesting for more info on high street prices for diamonds in Ireland:

Price Survey: Dublin B&M v PS search engine

We are buying FI''s wedding ring from Weldon''s in Dublin. We''ve found them to be competitive on price (FI''s wedding ring isn''t costing any more than it would through an online US vendor) and we also want to build up a relationship with a good jeweller at home in case we ever need one. we''ve been in to them many times and always found them very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. Can''t praise them enough!

anyone have a 5-prong setting?

(Sorry OP for this slight threadjack!)

Delster, did you have to pay local NY tax when you picked up the ring? I am in the process of picking up the ring in Feb.

A 6 prong setting definitely makes a solitaire look bigger. Because of the prong metal on the top and bottom of the stone, it adds about an extra mm of height to the ring, which is noticeable.

I know this because I had ordered two cz 2 ct solitaires, one in 4 prong, one in 6 prong, to compare, and the 6 prong looked like a bigger stone, even though both stones were the same size. (I wish I took pics...)

I know that I have a 4 prong setting now, but that''s because this setting originally had an asscher in it. I am going to be resetting my round in a 6 prong setting this spring.

No probs Megeve - this is info is also of use to me, If I decide to buy any jewelery from the states so no probs about the threadjack!!!!

Thanks VesperGilrl, I've always admired your set in your avatar. I'm looking forward to seeing your re-set!!!! I know a si-prong will be a higher setting but do you think that it makes the stone look bigger when viewed face up, IYKWIM......

Thanks to all for imput!!!

Thanks so much! Yup, a 6 prong set diamond does look bigger when viewed face up - the prongs at the 12 and 6 o clock positions add about an extra mm of "length" to the stone - so to my eyes, it creates an optical illusion that the stone is bigger.

Thanks for confirming that for me. A friend of mine has a 4 prong and I''ve recently started working with someone who has a similar sized stone (I think) but in a 6 prong setting and I thought it looked noticibaly bigger than my friends.

Hi megeve! I have no idea about the taxes as FI paid for the ring. Sorry not to be more helpful!!!!

I also think 6 prongs make an RB look slightly bigger. The main thing I love about 6 prongs though is that they give that nicely defined round shape.

Im not Delster but we did the same thing - nope you don''t pay taxes with mine if the diamond went from GOG to Leon then yes FI would have but because he sent it out of state to be valued and then back into NY nope no taxes :) at least I am sure there were no taxes because we got a refund for Leon :)

I wish I could have my ring and one just like Delster''s my diamond twinkie''s :), 4 or 6 prong really comes down to preference I don''t think mine looks any bigger then Delster''s just as she said it is a different look both IMO opinion beautiful :).

Delster & Deelight,
Thanks so much for the informations! Probably I would have to call Leon when the time comes for picking up!

RHL, I do not have any 4 or 6 prong ring but just wanted to say that for me, visually I prefer the 6 prong, it looks bigger! Hope that helps!

I''ve never seen a 5-prong setting for a round stone. Is there such a thing? I''ve seen pear shape stones with five prongs. . .

I have a 6-prong and I would say 6-prong looks a tad bigger, BUT a 4-prong if set a certain way (spready, squatty), can definitely look just as big. I think its a matter of preference IMO.

ditoo that.

I''ve had both - and the 6 prongs definitely make the diamond look bigger. However, the 4 prong setting is soooo sexy in that you can see the diamond more from the side. Oh, both are lovely.
