I bought a solitaire ring from bluenile (signature Ideal 0.7 ct) with this setting

http://www.bluenile.com/solitaire-diamond-engagement-ring-setting_8?filter_id=1&collection_id=234

The prong tips look very prominent and make the diamond look squarish. We have another ring that is older and is 14k .. but the prongs are fine and elegantly curved ... makes the ring look pretty and has a subtle elegance, and the diamond looks round and bigger.

I contacted bluenile and their settings are standard.

Can a local jeweller create the same setting as my old ring if i showed it to them?

Could a jeweller make the prongs thinner on the setting I linked above?

There is nothing wrong with the prongs on the engagement ring you purchased, as referenced on Blue Nile, they are a standard prong configuration and designed to be sturdy enough to properly secure your diamond during normal wear. Prongs wear down over time and that is when they tend to look light and delicate, it is also when they weaken and people lose their diamond.

Four prong settings have a tendency to make a round diamond look square because our eyes tend to drift out to the four corners created by the four prongs. Six prong settings tend to keep a round diamond looking round because they are equally spaced around the perimeter of the diamond.

A jeweler could certainly polish down the prongs on your setting, but will most likely recommend not doing so because it will affect the structural integrity of the setting.

What I''ve been seeing is that the prongs for that type of setting need to be thick enough to stay rigid and doesn''t allow for them to be too delicate. If you want your prongs to be more delicate, you would need to get a different kind of basket that has some more metal going "horizontally", if you can visualize what I''m saying, to keep it sturdy.
