Both stones with images look really nice - is there a big price difference? While the precision on the cut of #1 looks slightly better, #2 is a G and ever so slightly larger.

The WF and BG links are for virtual stones so I would not bother with them since you have other viable options.

For the JA ones:
1. nice, would need an IS with the high CA
2. very nice, ask for IS, but is it eye clean? I see a black spot on the table
3. nice, ask for IS
4. no, that black spot on the table is too big for me, it's a touch too deep and sym only gets a VG

Hmmm tough choice! I think I would go with the G, but I'm color sensitive so the $80 would be worth it to me. :)) Honestly, either is a fine choice. Have you seen them? If you have, go with the one that is more pleasing to your eyes.

OK, I bit the bullet on the G diamond, should be in by mid-next week. How can we be sure the Ideal-Scope image they sent me was for that diamond? I guess I heard so many shady acts in the diamond industry I'm a bit skittish buying, haha. Should I bring the diamond to an appraiser first thing when it comes in? How much would that typically cost?

Also, when handing this diamond over to a jeweler to make a custom setting, is there anything I should do to protect myself so they don't say "what diamond, you never left a diamond with us!"? I'm assuming a simple work order detailing the custom design as well as noting that customer left diamond with GIA#xxxx would be enough? Appreciate all the helpful advice so far from these forums!

Who is custom jeweler?
Where do you live (metro area)?

Take deep breath. We've got this.

Ask jeweler to show you your diamond under a microscope. (No scope, find another jeweler.) Have him help you see the inclusions and YOU make yourself a map of one or two of them that will be memorable to you so that when you look at the diamond again when you are picking it up you will know that it is yours. You may or may not be able to see the girdle inscription, assuming your diamond was inscribed, after the diamond is mounted, and that will be much easier for you to see in a microscope than with a loupe.

In an SI1 the inclusions will be much easier to see and learning one or two of the inclusions is easy peasy.

Also, I know everyone has heard stories of shady acts, but in reality the number of them is incredibly low. Since you are going to a local jeweler, check them out on Yelp. If they are good, it will be on Yelp, if they are bad, it will REALLY be on Yelp, since mad people tend to make a point of writing more than happy people.

Armed with some research on the reputation of the jeweler and having the jeweler help you to see the interior "fingerprint" of your diamond will grant you the peace of mind to relax during the mounting process. Looking at the "fingerprint" again when you pick it up will cement the fact that it is YOUR diamond and in addition will allow you to check the prongs for proper seating and also assure you that there was no damage to the diamond while being set.

Now you can enjoy the process instead of being fearful. This is an exciting time, enjoy it and let it be ALL that it can be and then create a special way to share it with your joy with the recipient.

The custom jeweler is one within the Jeweler's building in Boston, yelp reviews are great, and I felt comfortable meeting with him in person, however I just want to be overly cautious leaving a $3k diamond with someone while they make the setting.

In response to Wink, while I do think those are good measures, I am still looking for a way "in writing" to prove I left the diamond with him, not sure if there is a standard practice on how to word the drop-off document to protect myself.

I've received the diamond we chose in the mail, however the images that the seller provided does not match the diamond I have on hand, there are obvious feathers and twinning wisp across the table, however the jeweler I went to said the ASET test they did she'd give it an 8/10 in her opinion. I'm not sure what to do at this point. we verified the GIA inscription, but the fact they supplied me images of the diamond that isn't mine is a bit concerning. Thoughts?

Sorry I did not see this when it came in. Your jeweler should give you a receipt when you leave it with him. You can ask him to put the GIA report number on the receipt. That is pretty standard.

I think I should not comment on the pictures issue as I am a vendor and it is not appropriate for me to do so.

Send it back. You need the matching aset/idealscope to the stone they sent you in order to evaluate it. Is it eye-clean?

I'm no professional, but yes it appears eye clean, it has white feathers and a wisp across the table under microscope, nothing like they showed me in the images I requested. Also they sent me ideal when the diamond was with a 3rd party, and i requested additional ideal images when they received it at their store. Upon closer inspection, the second ideal image they sent me was just a 180 flip and crop of the original. I don't feel comfortable with this company now, after seeing they did that.

Now I feel like I'm back at square one two weeks behind, looking for a stone with my criteria above.
