I''ve been browsing the site as a visitor off-and-on for months, and I''d like to start by thanking all the experts for their generous donations of time and expertise!

I am now actively in the market, and I have a pretty good idea of what I am trying to create. Based on the intelligence gathering of my (hopefully!

) future wife''s closest friends, I have a pretty good idea of what she would ideally love to have:

3 stones, radiant or cushion cut, with the middle stone "at least 2 carats". She''s also interested in square (or very close) stones, but *not* princess cut.

Based on my initial exploration of this site, online retailers and a few dealers on 47th st, here is what I am realistically thinking I will be able to afford without sacrificing quality:

A middle stone in the 1.7-1.9 ct range and side stones ~.65-.70 ct.

I''m leaning toward radiant over cushion based on my own visual preferences, but I can be convinced otherwise since she is indifferent and whatever makes her happy is what I want. I''ve learned that G-H color works for me, and VS2/SI1 clarity is generally okay. I don''t mind minor inclusions that are only/mainly visible from the bottom or sides, but am very put off by any clouding. I also learned how important a reasonable (sub-68/69%) table is to me in terms of the overall fire of the stone, especially when viewed on an angle. I am planning to go with a platinum setting. My soon-to-be fiancee has tiny hands and fingers, so I''m leaning toward a lower setting.

I''m a methodical shopper but inexperienced with diamond/jewelry shopping, and I am definitely starting to feel that I am bogging myself down and overwhelming myself with information overload.

My (initial) questions for the group:

1) My biggest challenge so far is the seeming limited availability of square radiants. Is there a particular source I should explore that may carry more of this apparently uncommon variety?

2) I was initially thinking larger side stones (.80-.90 ct), but stones that size seem to detract from the center stone, and ~.70 ct seems to work better. My question is, at that size and considering they are side stones, should I even consider uncertified stones? My inclination is to dismiss the notion out of hand, but I''d love to hear the group''s opinions. Is it possible to find attractive uncertified stones that size? I am willing to spend the time if it is, but I am not willing to sacrifice quality for price (beyond the general parameters above).

3) This is probably a silly one, but how does one properly pronounce "ASET"? I''ve searched the FAQs unsuccessfully, so I apologize if the answer is there somewhere. (I feel like I''ve invested a lot of time getting to know what I''m talking about at at least some low level, and I''d hate to blatantly tip my novice hand on such a simple issue!)

Thank you so much, and sorry for the wordy post!

Also for your information, radiants can show more colour than a round diamond for example so G or H ( GIA graded) is a good cut off initially.

I'm a methodical shopper but inexperienced with diamond/jewelry shopping, and I am definitely starting to feel that I am bogging myself down and overwhelming myself with information overload.

My (initial) questions for the group:

1) My biggest challenge so far is the seeming limited availability of square radiants. Is there a particular source I should explore that may carry more of this apparently uncommon variety? Definitely try vendors who have in house diamonds, I would suggest trying Jon at

www.goodoldgold.com

Jon is in Long Island NY as it sounds as if that might be convenient for you, give him a call to make an appointment.

www.whiteflash.com

www.engagementringsdirect.com In NYC in the diamond district.

Radiants need to be seen as these can be tricky, so a vendor who has in house diamonds with photos and ASET images is invaluable.

2) I was initially thinking larger side stones (.80-.90 ct), but stones that size seem to detract from the center stone, and ~.70 ct seems to work better. My question is, at that size and considering they are side stones, should I even consider uncertified stones? I am willing to spend the time if it is, but I am not willing to sacrifice quality for price (beyond the general parameters above). I would consider ungraded side stones if these were recommended by a vendor I trusted.

3) This is probably a silly one, but how does one properly pronounce 'ASET'? I've searched the FAQs unsuccessfully, so I apologize if the answer is there somewhere. (I feel like I've invested a lot of time getting to know what I'm talking about at at least some low level, and I'd hate to blatantly tip my novice hand on such a simple issue!) ASET is pronounced Ah-set, sounds like the word asset.

Thank you so much, and sorry for the wordy post!
Hope this helps and thank you for the very kind words!

Thanks for your quick response and your suggestions. I''m sure I''ll have more questions as my search continues!

Most welcome Ryan and ask away!

In addition to the very good sources for diamonds already mentioned, David at www.diamondsbylauren.com has extraordinary sources for beautiful radiants (although his site is mostly known for colored diamonds). Big, fat trapezoids or fat bullets alongside a radiant would be gorgeous... Also, if you decide on a cushion center instead of a radiant, a pretty option might be to have RBs on either side of the cushion for something a little different. Regardlless, it sounds like you are well on your way to building a sensational ring!

Question: are you talking about .70ct for EACH side stone, or is .70 the ctw for both sides?

Thanks for your advice. I''m talking about .65-.70 on each side, for a total cwt for the ring of ~3.2. I actually know she''d like the cut of the side stones to match the middle, but that''s my bad for failing to mention it!

Have you considered an asscher for a square stone? They are very different from radiant and cushions though.

Most of the vendors on this site don''t have radiants in stock; they have to call them in. You didn''t say exactly what your budget is, but if I were you, I would buy a loose diamond and have Leon Mege make your 3 stone ring. He will get the side stones for you, and he has a very good eye for what will look right with your diamond. Since it seems you''re located in New York, you can just take a stone to him, and he can make the setting for you. He is said to be temperamental, but his workmanship is top notch.

Here is one stone that could be promising based on the numbers. You could have it sent to you to see if you like it.

Tyty- I haven''t considered an asscher, because my sources were adamant that the lady''s preference is radiant or cushion...and I''m not nearly dumb enough to go off script in this particular case!

Thanks again to all who have responded. I have another round of appointments to look at stones on 47th St tomorrow...wish me luck!
