My girlfriend and I went looking for engangement rings and she found a low set small halo that she loved which had a 2.2 carat center stone. She said she wants this Halo setting and I think she beleved I would get a diamond around 2-2.5 carat. Her mother ownes a pawnshop and got a 3.6 (GIA certified, we checked) carat at a superb deal, cheaper than a 2.2!

Details:
3.68, VVS1, G (Strong Blue), Round Brilliant cut. Polish/symettry, very Good.

My problem is now I worry about getting such a large diamand and with a Halo it would be too large! Her mother tells me I should just give the simple solitaire (with 2 small side stones on each side) and go back and reaffirm her choice with her after the proposal and confirm she wants the Halo. Her mother is more conservative and has always cared more for simplicity with large stones. I feel like the solitaire is a bit "plain" for her taste.

3.6 with Halo too much for a size 4 ring? I'm torn between getting her the ring she loved (with a 2.2 carat) with such a big diamond or getting something "plain" and then letting her up the ring after i propose. I want her to be as happy as possible with the ring selection. I'm sure she will be happy regardles, but of course i want to make it as perfect as possible.

Any advice on the Halo with this diamond?

I think this is a decision your gf should make! Propose with the large stone in a temporary inexpensive solitaire (can find them as low as $150) and go from there!

Agreed with temp proposal setting and letting her choose. That's a big stone for a halo, if you get one I would suggest a really thin and delicate one done by someone who can handle such delicate pave. DBL, Leon Mege, Steven Kirsch or Victor Canera.

I agree about setting it in a simple solitaire, and letting your girlfriend pick out her setting when she knows what she will be putting in it. Can't wait to see photos of your stone and what ever setting you decide on.

HI:

Again, I agree to let your gal decide. Will she want this large diamond--ya never know, she might like the smaller stone!

cheers--Shaorn

I agree to talk to her. A 3 carat stone haloed will cover the top of her finger in a size 4. I personally would not halo a stone that large. There are a ton of gorgeous pave settings that will dress up a solitaire without adding a halo. I think it really needs to be her call though after you propose...

She may still want a halo. We have people with 4-5 carat stones with halos on here. It's a very personal choice, so I suggest just proposing with a temp setting or no setting at all and letting her chose her setting herself. Don't listen to her mom-- if they have different taste, as you said, they have different taste and her mom's opinion has no bearing.

I think a halo on a 3.6 stone on a size 4 ring will be huge, really too big. I would leave it set as it is and let your girl pick out the setting.
It does all depend on how the halo is done. The less metal the better.

q...do you think she will be happy with a larger stone or do you think she would prefer the halo look with the size she saw in the store?

Ditto PP's about having your girlfriend choose. Personally, I would not want a halo on a stone that large. It would (a) detract from the stone, and at that size I would want to show it off!, and (b) would be too large and look more like a cocktail ring than an engagement ring, IMO.

Good luck and congrats on a great find!

Hi There,

I know a lot of people are saying that a 3.6 carat center stone in a halo would be "too big," I just want to say I beg to differ. We are having a ring designed, after seeing "The One" by Harry Winston, with a 4.01 carat center stone and a halo. My fingers a 4.25 and it doesn't look too big! Besides "too big" is a very personal choice. I agree with the other who are suggesting you give it to her as a solitaire and let her choose her setting. (The only problem with that is that she won't get to wear it right away!)

I have size 4 finger as well and if I liked that type of setting for me, I would still do it, but a delicate halo that showed off the center stone. However, as others have said either propose to her with a temp setting or talk to her first and find out what she'd like to do. For better reference on how much space it may take up on her finger, GOG has a sizing chart on their website (I'll link to it). Maybe that will help also.

I have a large stone with a halo too (3.9ct OEC), and finger size 4.5 and love it! I agree with the others; let your girl decide what she would prefer. :)
