Hi all,
I posted last week, and thanks to all of your wisdom and advice, I''ve selected a shared prong eternity-style band for my engagement ring (and for the matching wedding band.)

One final question: I am going for a delicate, thin look to the bands, but my fiance likes to maximize the, uh, bling. My center stone is a 2.05c round brilliant. Should I use 2 or 3 point diamonds for the shared prong engagement setting and wedding band? Will there be a noticable difference in thickness between the two? If anyone has any pictures that might demonstrate how either of these options might look, that would be great, too. All opinions are appreciated!
Thanks,
Sarah.

For that size stone, i would use the 3 pointers. although the difference between 2 and 3 point stones will be negligible...did you mean 20 and 30 points?

Uhhh. Yeah, what you said!

I haven't quite got the lingo down yet, despite all my lurking. .03 vs .02 carats is what I meant.

That's good that you don't think the size difference would be noticable. I would like the band to be as thin as possible, but my fiance is a little size-obsessed (bless his heart).

Thanks a lot. I really appreciate your input (and the correction!)

Any one else?

Hi, Sarah:/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]>/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]>

Well, here is a thread that might help: /www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]>/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]>

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/help-with-finding-wedding-band-for-3-stoner.16372//www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]>/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]>

The eternity band that Patty has on is with 3-pointers....and her center stone is 1.35 carats. /www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]>/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]>

The 7-stone band I have on is 5-pointers....and my center stone is 1.24 carats. (This is the same as eternity - just doesn't go around)./www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]>/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]>

You can expect that 5-pointer stones will measure approximately 2.5mm.....3 pointers will measure more like 2.2mm./www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]>/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]>

I found when trying bands on with my ring that going with a band that's too small is just as dangerous as going too big. If the band it too big, it looks too flashy...however, if it's too small, it looked overwhelmed and unbalanced./www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]>/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]>

Where you have a 2.05 carat stone, my first pick would be 5-point stones, but I definitely wouldn't go smaller than 3-pointers with your stone size. I'll try to attach a picture below that shows the 5-pointer eternity band next to my 1.24 stone.

Ok, here is 5-pointer band next to a 3-stone with a center of 1.24 (measures 7mm).

Wow, that is gorgeous. Thanks for sharing the picture!
You definitely have a point there about wanting the whole thing to look "balanced."

Check out Mara's post from the "Show me the Ring" forum (the link is on her post below this one).

Mara's engagement ring has 3-pointers and the wedding band is 2-pointers.

Thanks Patty.. I was going to post that same thread! However, that link doesn't work...try this one:

As Patty noted, my e-ring has .03c stones and my wedding band has .02c stones. Honestly the difference is minimal but with a 2c center, I'd go with .03c. My center is a 1.29c with .03c stones and it still makes the diamond look very big, with a 2c, it will look huge!

My e-ring band is about 2.8mm wide. The wedding ring is about 2.3mm wide.

Thanks, Mara, for posting a link that works!

Thanks a lot for all the input. Your rings are stunning!
I think I am leaning towards the .03 stones, since all of you seem to think it will be okay. Do you think the .02 would look bad, or just that the .03 would be better?

Sorry for being a pest. I really appreciate all your help.

Have you been able to see any? I know eternity bands are hard to find. If you are near a Tiffany's, they stock them (in the shared prong style). I bought one (not at Tiffany's!) and looked at their stock to decide what size stones I would like (I know they stock one with .08 stones).

I think you should find a local B&M store and try some on. This kind of thing is hard to get just right with only specs. You need to see what looks right to you. I was just in a high end B&M store today, and they had eternity rings coming out their ears. (THey are very popular these days, as you know.) Even looking at a non-eternity style will give you a good feel for how the different sizes look.

the difference between the two is so minimal that .02 vs .03 is really no difference at all. if you want to keep the band thin, there will be relatively little metal, so all you will see is sparkle regardless. we had to have ours made custom as there weren't many styles at all like what i wanted back at the time (1.5 years ago).

good luck!

Thank you for all of your help! I'll be sure to post pictures when I get the final product. Now just four long weeks to wait with a naked finger....

Thanks again! I really appreciate your time.

Take care,
Sarah.

Sarah, did you decide to go with the 3-pointers?

Yup...I actually think I'm going to take a cue from Mara, and use 3 pointers for the e-ring and 2-pointers for the wedding band.

I'm so excited to see how it turns out.

I can't thank you guys enough for all the inspiration.

Congrats! I'm so excited to see what it looks like! Considering of course I plan to have a 2c on this setting at some point in the not-so-distant future, it will give me an idea.

Shh don't tell Greg.

Did you specify a mm width for the bands or just let the chips fall where they may?

Good for you, Sarah! I can't wait to see it.

Mara's is one of my favorite settings ever, so yours should be beautiful!

Awww thanks Patty!
