2.94 carat spessartite and an 8.7 carat schiller sunstone

I've been browsing Tan's listings for a while and returned a couple of things, but I haven't really seen anything that jumped at me. I finally saw a spessartite listing that really jumped out at me. It was a 2.94 carat spessartite with great cutting, proportions, size, clarity and color, and a great price. I bought it immediately, as soon as it popped up. I think he had just listed it!!

Here's a sunshine photo. It's very similar in color to my huge Loliondo trillion from Gene, except I think the pear is slightly more saturated. It's a yellowish orange, but no brown. It's not a yellow ocre color which plagues many yellowish spessartites, especially from the Tanzanian area. Ignore the dark areas of the stone, those are caused by my fingers. It has viturally no extinction. The cutting and proportions are excellent, not to mention that it is eye clean and almost 3 carats!!

Here it is in a gemstone holder in natural diffused lighting (possibley the worst lighting to photograph spessartites in), but I just wanted to show you the nice proportions, no window, and lack of extinction. I have an affinity for pears and I love the proportions. It also has a nice crown.

I won this cat's eye 8.7 carat schiller sunstone on auction. It looks like a glitterball in the sun, and is translucent. It's a nice piece to have in my collection. It actually does have a sharp cat's eye in the sun, but I can't get it to appear in my photos. Sunlight shot, where it goes very orange. Unfortunately, it doesn't retain this color out of the sun and goes more brown.

This is the sunstone out of direct sunlight, and in the shade. It loses much of it's orange saturation.

oooo I LOVE that pear!!! The color is just amazing! I recently began getting into gemstones as opposed to diamonds and see a lot of postings about "Tan". Which website is that exactly?

Very nice TL! I was watching that sunstone too but that's all I could do. I've been cut off from gemstone buying, even from Tan.

That spess is really nice! I bought a pear spess not too long ago from Tan, though mine has more yellow and it's not near as big.

Any plans to set either of them?

TL as a fellow lover of pears I can honestly say that's a very very very nicely proportioned one. I adore the symmetry and that it's neither too long or fat. Just right! In all honesty though I have to say I'm not loving the colour. It's very possibly the photos but it doesn't look up to the standard of your others.

I know this will surprise you but I actually prefer the sunstone and even like the colour out of direct sunlight. You can just see the cat's eye in that picture also. I would never have put you down as a Sunstone lover so your new purchase has really surprised me!

What are your plans?????

You are truly a lucky lady to snag such a nice looking spessartite from Tan as I’ve been browsing too but didn’t see anything worth pursuing. It has a nice combo of colour, size and clarity. While your cabochon sunstone might look brownish indoors, it still shows the glittery shiller which should make up for the loss of colour somewhat.

Tan, as he is known here on PS, runs 3 eBay stores by the name VVS1Gems, Gemburionline and something else which I cannot recall at the moment.

Thank you. I have to say that there is really no comparison IRL between the pear and the sunstone. The sunstone is pretty, but has a distinct brown modifier indoors, and while it's pretty, I prefer faceted stones with sparkle to them. I guess for me, the price was right on the sunstone, and it was a curiosity. I don't plan on setting it, but it's fun to look at nonetheless.

I attached a photo of the new spessartite next to my very saturated orange pear, which is one carat larger (4 carats). Although, as people can see, the smaller stone has some yellow to it, the yellow is very secondary to the orange, and it is still a nice orange stone. I've seen some spessartites where the yellow was so pronounced, that they look more yellow than orange! Please note that again, this photo was taken in natural diffused lighting, and is the worst kind of lighting to show off the magnificent orange color in any spessartite.

That's a better photo! The Spess looks more "TL" now!

I knew the Sunstone wasn't really a "you" stone! A lovely pretty gem to have nonetheless and actually I'd be tempted to set it but I know the brown modifier will kill it for you!

It wasn't Tan that cut me off. My husband and mom made comments about packages coming in from overseas, at least one a week, so jokingly they asked me if they were drugs so I stopped. LOL I had developed a bit of gemstone buying addiction. The prices were too good to pass up! Since then I've watched a few stones sell for less than I'd have paid. I keep hoping to see more of them here.

High kt yellow gold sounds delish! I know you love halo's. What about a halo made of small pear diamonds?

TL- i saw that stone, and it looked a little brown on my new (stupid, stupid) laptop, so i "watched" it and went to the bathroom. When i came back, it was sold! i snooze i lose!

It's really beautiful, TL, and I love its yellowish-orange saturation. It's like a smaller version of your 6 ct. trillion.

It's well-cut as well, and it has nice dispersion. Seriously, this one is screaming for 18K YG!!

Finally I found out who got that sunstone! I bid a bit on it at the beginning, after watching for several days...but I have won a couple since then that I hope to have fun playing with...and maybe I can find a nice goldfish setting for them huh? What fun stones.

I think the spessartite is wonderful! Just a beautiful, beautiful color. I would snatch it, too, but I was browsing sapphires recently (although you said you were wary of corundum). But it is amazing! Congratulations! Are you now a Spessartite Lover?
