My boyfriend and I have been looking for diamonds lately and think we have found the one! /idealbb/images/smilies/appl.gif'');" height=30 alt="Insert smilie

We have been all over and looked at GIA stones and EGL stones and have compared stones next to each other. We have looked at diamonds with very similar certifications gradings, and have found that we like this one EGL stone the best! I am stumped as to why so many negative comments have been written about EGL. The diamond we found was priced $14,000 and was a beautiful stone, which thrilled us because many of the GIA stones were priced several thousand dollors more! Although my "pre-fiance" and I love the look of this stone, I am curious what those with a little more knowledge think. Is this a good stone and a good price? Any feedback is appreciated!

Hi,

As long as the grading is what the report states it is then you will be fine. Lets make sure that the SI-1 is really an SI-1 and not anything lower. Have you examined the stone under a good scope? Are you happy with the number of inclusions and location? It looks a tad deep on depth but it may perform well. If a similar stone retails for an additional $2,000 with a GIA report don't you think they would have submitted this stone to GIA if they could get that much more for it? Just my thoughts...Cindy

Not all EGL certs are inaccurate, if you love the stone, and it is saving you money (which is important), then I wouldn't let anyone tells you any different. It looks to be a very nice stone~!

Make the sale contingent on an independant appraiser confirming the egl info and you should be aok.
The problem with egl is that there are many egl labs and not all of them grade to the same standard.
egl-usa is usualy within 1/2 to 1 grade when compared to GIA grades.
egl anywhere else will often be way off.
egl-isreal is reported to be the worst one for being off with egl-NY being the closest to GIA grading.

some might say why would they get an EGL cert when GIA could net them more $$ for the cert. but maybe because EGL is more lax on grading and it can give them more $$ on the front end with a better clarity or color grade.

others may say that EGL stones can be a bargain if you have a good eye and you should take advantage of the ~15% discount that they bring over a GIA stone.

the numbers are nice..the depth is a bit deep for my taste and the crown/pav %'s aren't as accurate as angles would be but that doesnt mean the end of the world

i'd also personally focus on getting at least VG VG on polish and symm vs G VG and EX/ID if you can. but you may not require that. the HCA gives it a 3.2 with the % which isn't really accurate, it could be better or it could be worse. the %'s are rounded and the decimal makes a difference.

For comparisons sake...there is a 2c H SI2 H&A online that is $14300 and also a 2.16c H SI2 branded H&A that is $15500. Both are AGS0. This stone you are looking at is a better deal with G SI1 but not by oodles because the cut on these two is going to be stellar. So it's kind of a trade off?

but since you have seen the stone in person, if your eye likes it, that's really what matters. in the end you wear the stone daily!

good luck!

Well, my boyfriend called the jeweler and played hard ball. /idealbb/images/smilies/angryfire.gif');" height=16 alt="Insert smilie

" src="http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/angryfire.gif" width="16 border=0"> He told him the depth was a little too deep for the pricce and he made it sound like we wanted to back out of the deal. The jeweler went down on price.....Amazing....he knocked off $1,000 and said he would give it to us for $13,000. This is very comparable to other 2.04 EGL diamonds with G / SI1 I have seen on certain web sites, so we are pleased. It really is a beautiful diamond and I think it is going to look fabulous on my hand! /idealbb/images/smilies/love.gif');" height=15 alt="Insert smilie

Thanks for everyone's response, and as soon as I get my diamond (in a few months), I will post!

Get it independantly appraised! You could be getting an H-I SI2 if it is EGL foreign.

Make sure you can get your money back if it is too far off from the certificate.

ditto: get it appraised and this will cut out the guesswork.

The thing about it is....we have compared this EGL G-SI1 diamond to a few different GIA G-SI1 diamonds and we thought this was a better diamond. It not only looked better to the naked eye -- but it was priced much better too! We even compared it to a few GIA H-SI1 diamonds and the EGL we saw clearly had a better color, better florescense, etc.

With this being said, it is still worth it to have an idependant appraiser look at it? And how does one go about have an independant jeweler appraise it, without having first purchased the diamond? (I don't want to piss our jeweler off

, but have no idea how to go about this, or even if it is needed at this point.)

Thanks!

Many jewlers will ship the diamond to your appraisor, the appraisor can examine it and talk with you, you will need an appraisor anyway for insurance. The appraisor will not release to you until it is paid for so the jeweler is protected. If the jeweler is surprised that you want it appraised by a 3rd party, then I would wonder about him, this is a very common thing to do. Good luck

ps. there are many independent, solid appraisors on this site.

With every due respect, if *I* were dropping $13K on a stone, the last thing I'd be worried about is pissing off the jeweler. I'm sure your jeweler doesn't just drop $30K on a car without doing his homework or buying a house without a home inspection, so this shouldn't be an insult to him.

The point of having an independent appraiser look at it isn't so s/he can tell you the diamond's beautiful - you already know that it appeals to your eye. The appraiser can make sure that the diamond is properly graded, and THAT affects price.

If you think it's a G and it grades as a G, great. If you think it's a G and it grades as an H or an I, it doesn't make the diamond any less beautiful and you should still want it, BUT you should get it for an appropriate price. Would you want to pay the price of a G and get a stone that's really an I? Probably not, and that's where the independent appraiser is there....to protect your interest and help ensure you get the value you are paying for.

Well said Aljdewey.
