In a halo probably harder to see but in a solitaire you would probably see the difference.

More important than the weights are the measurements (length and width) and the cut. A deep 1.5 ct. may actually face up smaller than a less deep 1.33. A well-cut diamond will look larger than a poorly-cut one of the same dimensions. Don't get hung up on weight alone.

what would an average L,W,D be for a 1.5 ct and the 1.33ct? also assuming both diamonds were EX cut. is there any chance someone would have the 2 diamonds side by side in a pic or youtube clip?

I'm going to say that a 1.33 is about 7.1mm diameter. Depth is maybe 61% - 62%, in the range of the "PS cheat sheet" for ideal cuts.

If I look at the Diamond Search here, in-house stones, a 1.5ct might range from 7.3mm or 7.35mm if it's typical depth, up to 7.5mm if it's shallower like a 60/60 diamond. Most 1.5ct diamonds aren't going to be 7.5mm, so perhaps 1.3 or 1.4ct gets you close enough to the 1.5ct appearance.

A 7.5mm diameter, super-ideal cut, seems to be more like a 1.6ct RB. That 1.5-1.6ct range is very competitive, and 1.5ct is also a price point for a per-carat increase, as well as more fudge-cuts that are done to retain weight. You always pay a premium to jump to 1.5ct super-idea H&A as opposed to stay just under it, is my experience. I could never find a really great deal on a top performing 7.5mm RB, but I did find one on a 1.34ct. Set in a halo, a 7.1-7.2mm diamond, especially if it has a taller crown, has a "big" look.

Just using area of a circle, here's the very rough estimate area differences compared to the 7.1mm diamond, about a 1.33 or 1.34ct. PS has kind of a rule of thumb that upgrades are worth doing if you get 10% larger face-up size, but you'd actually see maybe a 5% larger face-up size.
7.1 mm is the reference diameter
7.3 4.8% bigger area
7.35 6% bigger
7.5 10.6% bigger

GOG has this shallow 1.51 ct. I like its BrillianceScope, but only 8.9 on the Isee2 isn't as great as a 9.8, lol, and this diamond looks a little dark at times because it's shallower, I suspect. Plus the crown angle is low, 33%. It's one of those that I'd like to see in person, to see if it's "good enough," though.

If your budget for the diamond and setting is $12k, I definitely recommend staying at the 1.3-1.4 range for the diamond especially since you plan to have a halo.

I'll second that opinion, given a defined budget of $12k, you're going to get a nicer stone typically staying under that 1.5 mark, and the cut quality and depth can play into it greatly.

There is not much noticable difference in a solitaire. In a halo, you really would not see the difference.

Are you asking about round or cushion diamonds? The numbers above apply to rounds only. Cushions are a different ball game.

I'm looking for a good comparison photo but haven't found one yet that's exactly the sizes you want.

From an old PS thread: Sizes, from left to right, and I estimated the diameters:
1.02ct [E/VS1] approx. 6.4 or 6.5mm
1.21ct [G/VVS1] maybe 6.8 - 6.9 mm
1.51ct [F/SI1] maybe 7.3 - 7.4 mm
2.01ct. [E/VS1] approx. 8mm

cushions: I don't know. You'd have to search for it.

Cushions face up a lot smaller and they're a lot deeper (which obviously causes the smaller look).
