14k, 18k, or plat for this eternity ring?

Engagement ring will be 18k white gold solitaire. Do I stay with 18k for this eternity or go with something else?
I am most concerned about strength and durability. The eternity ring is pretty thin (1.8mm) and I am most concerned about losing stones. I know platinum displaces instead of wearing away like gold but I have also read that it is soft and easily bent (I imagine this depends on the alloy though?). I am concerned if platinum is easily bent then the little prongs holding the diamonds will be easily bent. I am concerned about 18k for this same reason. I am leaning toward 14k just because it is a harder metal.
In reading about the properties of the different metals I have come across a lot of conflicting info so I'm just not sure what to think at this point. I am wondering if anyone could offer a little insight?

thanks!

Well...this is anecdotal evidence, but...59 years ago my mother received a platinum eternity ring set with diamonds. I just gave it to my godson to use as a wedding band next September when he marries his fiancée. The stones are all still intact. They are channel set, unlike the ones in the bands pictured above, but 59 years is a pretty good run!

Try to eliminate my hand (mentally) from this picture. I have photos of this ring in a ring box, but they aren't as clear as this one of it on my old hand! The ring is, as I said above, intact. As far as I know, a stone never came loose.

In the style ring you showed in the top of the thread, 18kt white gold may be a great, long term choice. It can be a very hard and durable metal if alloyed properly. A channel set ring may prove more secure in the long run, but the look of the open sides is attractive.

Platinum is agreat metal for highly complex work, but for a plain wedding ring, it won't prove much better in any way than 18 karat gold.
