This magnificent specimen was recovered from the Cullinan Mine, about 90 minutes away from Johannesburg, the same mine that gave us the the bauble on top of Queen Liz's sceptre!

I'm telling you, this is seriously making me want to reclaim my ancestral land! Actually, they don't even need to give me the land, a few pretty diamonds will do quite nicely, thanks!

Kawabunga!

Imagine the value. :o

So pretty, even before cutting!

What a great photo! :P

Kenny - everyone here is talking about the blue that recently sold for $25mil. I don't know nearly enough about fancy colours, but isn't the other one a more saturated blue, compared to this one, and therefore more valuable?

Luv2sparkle - it is stunning, isn't it? I waaaaant!

LaraOnline - it looks bluest in this pic, so I'm wondering if it might be photoshopped? Either way, it's beautiful!

Yes, price per carat goes up dramatically when the color is stronger.

GIA splits up FCDs into nine color grades with prices peaking at Fancy Vivid.
This looks around Fancy Light or Fancy Blue, though clever cutting may bump it up to Fancy Intense Blue.
Compared to other hues GIA is pretty generous with color grades for Blue, for some reason.

They will cut it to retain maximize carat weight AND maximize color strength.
It may end up as a trillion, but I think it would be stunning as an emerald cut even if that had less color saturation.
They won't cut in into an emerald cut so I guess I'll just have to buy it.

Just

I would dig up the backyard (to plant veggies). What if there is a rough waiting to be discovered in the backyard :ugeek:

What a great discovery. It is such a pretty color.

What are you waiting for - get thee up the road Trekkie!

But I don't have a wide angle lens that goes THAT wide.

Kenny - thanks as always for such a detailed response! You've pretty much confirmed what I told my family, but for some reason it carries more weight coming from an anonymous expert on the internet! :P

Mr_Kroshka and Minousbijoux I would happily dig up my backyard, but I don't think I'd find anything!

Ironically, the diamond fields in Kimberley, slap bang in the middle of South Africa, are situated on what used to be my ancestral land (I am part Bushman/Khoisan). Whenever there's a huge discovery like this I am tempted to consult an attorney to see if our clan would be entitled to any recompense.

But when I consider the fact that a few hundred miles away in neighboring Botswana the Bushman tribes have been forcibly removed, herded like cattle and forced to settle in areas far away from their traditional hunting ground and with limited access to water to make way for diamond mining, I don't rate our chances very highly!

Trekkie:

Your future is not in diamond mining. I believe you would do much better if you focused on finding either Lithium crystals; or better yet the rarer Dilithium crystals. Diamonds are cheap baubles in comparison to Lithium crystals and almost worthless in comparison to Dilithium crystals.

Finding a source of Lithium crystals is very important. Just beware of woman taking the venus drug.

Have a great day,

Perry
