I have done extensive research on diamonds. Had an 1.53 E VVS2 with a Good Cut (8 years ago), GIA certificate, no fluorensce and no culet. Girdle was thin to slightly thick. Ring and diamond is lost. Now looking for an E VS1 diamond. Question: What is good and bad in the Girdle. What should I look for? What should I stay away from? Also, now GIA grades diamonds by cut, symmetry & polish. I was told, go with a VG, VG, VG minimum.

Anybody''s opinion?

My advise would be to buy a colored stone, not a diamond.

You'll get more response posting this on Rocku Talky. In the meantime, I'll answer some of your questions:

1. Girdle: Stay away from the extremes. Too thin and it'll risk chipping. Too thick and it's hidden carat weight that will make the diamond look a smidge smaller. Somewhere around Very Thin to Very Thick is all right. My preference is to have the girdle an even thickness, like Thin or Medium, not Thin to Thick.

2. I agree that you should aim to go with at least VG for the polish and symmetry.

3. As for cut, I disagree - I aim for the highest and very best. Cut is what makes the stone sparkle like there's no tomorrow. Unfortunately, the GIA cut grading isn't very good. I prefer to use the AGS grading method and the HCA.

In terms of parameters for rounds (I assume you are shopping for a round diamond), these are the stats I like:
depth - 60 - 62%
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes
polish and symmetry - VG and better
