My fiance and I just saw a 1.79 VS1 H round diamond that we like. It's AGS certified with the following specs:

Measurements: 7.78 x 7.83 x 4.82 mm
Cut Grade: AGS Ideal 0 (Polish, Symmetry, Proportions all ideal)
Color Grade: AGS 2 (H)
Clarity Grade: AGS 3 (VS1)
Table: 55%
Total Depth 61.6%
Crown Angle: 34.3
Crown Height: 15.1%
Pavilion Depth: 43.3%
Pavilion Angle: 41.1%
Girdle: 1.4-1.9%
Culet: Pointed
Flourescence: Medium Blue
Cost: $14,600

I had wanted a diamond in the 1.8-2.0 carat range, no "yellower" than G as it will be set in platinum and I have heard that the more colored stones don't look right with that metal. The above stone looks good, with no inclusions visible under the table with a loupe. Could I do better (lighter or bigger stone) while keeping under our budget of $18,500? Should I be concerned with an H color stone looking poorly in platinum? And should I be concerned with "Medium Blue Flourescence"?

Added later: I used Holloway Cut Adviser which rates Light Return, Fire, Scintillation and Spread as Very Good. Total Visual Performance 2.4

Thanks so much for your help!

WOW!

If you don't want this one, I'd be happy to take it off your hands! From what I've read, AGS is pretty reliable on color, and H is not going to look "yellow" even in platinum. As for the fluorescence, medium blue won't be a minus, it may even be a plus as blue cancels out yellow.

Go for it!!!

Yes, that sounds like a real winner. Buy it and post lots of pictures for us eye-candy addicts.

The H stone positively won't be a problem at all in platinum. In fact, with a well-cut I stone, you'd probably still be safe.

It sounds lovely.....and exceptionally well-priced.

The cut looks good but it would help if you get some missing info

Total Depth %

Pavilion angle

Then use https://www.pricescope.com/cutadviser.asp to accurately check the cut

Search for "Flourescence" in the forum and you will find many experts think it adds beauty to a diamond if med blue or lower.

A well cut H should be beautiful and look fine in Plat. However, you need to look at some H stones before you decide. Good link https://www.pricescope.com/forum/ed...diamond-eye-catching-or-beautiful-t15002.html

Final suggestion is to send it to a local independent appriaser where you can view it before buying.

Price looked good for a stone with HCA url]

Thanks for your feedback. I updated pavilion angle and total depth in first post, in addition to providing info from plugging numbers in to HCA. Total Visual Performance resulted in 2.4 "Very Good -- Worth Buying if the price is right"

Looks like you have a winner

Did you hold the stone next to some platinum settings. It's your call on whether you notice any color or if you find it unappealing. Other people won't notice

If you are still thinking about 2c, another good link is » Price stats

You can see the ave price change per carat for tweaking your requirements. Probably need to go I SI1 for 2c in a good cut

Not quite

Here are four contenders found fast enough:

This one is somewhat less expensive (12k), still AGS0 and nicely tops the HCA: 1.71 H-SI HCA Ex-Ex-Ex-EX Surprisingly, this one is also a hair larger than the stone you posted, just because it is cut less deep.

This 1.71 E-SI1 - higher color if you wish so and a very clean SI.

And two 2 carat pieces came along:

One 2.03cts, G Si1 right below 18k.

and another
2.13 cts H SI1 that seems to have a bit better odds to be perfectly eye clean than the previous stone and is not all that much above the budget mark.

There may be more like this upon a diligent search. These took five minutes to dig up
