1.75 ct G or 1.6 ct F ?

Hi everyone,

I'm deciding between a ~1.7-1.75 ct G VS2 round cut or a ~1.6 ct F VS2 round cut. I'm going for ideal/excellent cut and from what I've read, a G may be indistinguishable from an F once it is set for this type of cut.

If all else is equal, will a difference in size of 0.1-0.15 ct be noticeable in this size range? In this size range, will it be easier to tell the difference between G and F colors? We are both pretty color sensitive.

Thanks,

John

Id like to know more about numbers and details of the cut.

Assuming that the cut and overall quality of the stones are equal, I'd go with the larger stone unless your future FI is really color sensitive. Most people will not detect color in a GIA graded "G" stone...

If the only difference between the stones is size and color, I would go for the larger stone. I think there would be a slightly noticeable size difference between a 1.6 and 1.75, for sure. I have a GIA F as a center stone, which is placed next to G stones in a three stone setting. I can't see a difference at all between them.

Thanks everyone for the replies!

I'll provide more details of the cut once I narrow it down to a few choices. Right now I have more than 10 stones that I'm looking at. The general guidance is really useful. I'll pull maybe the top candidate for the 1.6 F and then a few 1.7-1.75 Gs.

Thanks again!

John

I located a few candidates- these all perform well on the HCA and meet what I'm looking for in terms of the basic grading. I've done a lot of research over the past few months, but I don't have any "real" experience in this area. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

John

1.72 ct G/VS2 (A little concerned about the defect right in the middle. Seems VERY obvious on the 10x gcal image)

My problem with Blue Nile is that they don't show you a magnified image of the stone or an idealscope image other than what we can see on the GCAL. So you don't have as much info as you do from WF. The 1.75 ct. G is certainly larger than the F VS2 from WF. But at least with the stone from WF, the proof is provided for the top cut quality. This would be a hard decision for me.

Of the two G stones, I prefer the 1.75 ct. If you think she would prefer a larger stone, then this one is the one I would choose.

I would go with the Whiteflash stone for the reasons that DS enumerated. Just seems a safer choice to me...or, see if they have a G/H color stone in the 1.75 range....

I did look but they don't really have a G in a larger size that compares with the 1.75, unfortunately.

Thank you again for the input.

What I may do is purchase the 1.75 ct then take it to an appraiser where I can get the same images that are available on a site like WF or GOG. BN does have a good return policy which will allow me enough time to have it appraised and send it back if it doesn't compare favorably to the 1.6 F VS2 on WF. This is a bit risky since I'll eat ~$200-300 if it is bad, but I could stomach the $2-300 if it means avoiding a bad purchase.

Will have to sleep on it this weekend. I'm in the fortunate position of having some time :)

I think that's a good plan. You don't even need an appraiser. All you really need is an Ideal scope image. And you can just buy an ideal scope and then take a pic with your own camera.

Ditto! You can see from the WF stone what the idealscope image should look like.

ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL, I'd say 1.75 G but then again I don't care that much about color. However, if you would have asked substituting "H" or "G" I would have to think twice. I can now plainly see the color in an H. Don't get me wrong. I'd love to have a 2.7 ct H (!) or anything down to J (!) but I can see it now. Strangely enough, I adore M-O, and then light yellow. I don't know why. I also like size (I can't believe I just admitted that- I'm the original "I don't care if it's 5 points" guy or I used to be). Honestly, I think perceptions and preferences about color (and size and clarity) are always in a state of change, perhaps never really static. This is why I really do believe this is the kind of decision each individual (um, guys, it's OK to ask your girlfriend what she wants, k?) must make for her or himself.

The appraiser just replied to me and can measure it within a week, so I think I'm going to go with the 1.75 G. Let's hope it works out!

Thanks again everyone!
