Guys,

I'm checking out this ring for my gf.
What do you guys think?

Round 1.38
H SI2 (GIA)
62/57
Cut:Ideal
7.11 - 7.15 x 4.42
Polish: ex
Symmetry: ex
Crown: 35.5
Pavillion: 41.2
Culet: Medium
$6753.27

Will this look too yellow because it's a decent size (1.38)?
Will the defects show up too strongly because of its size too?
Is a culet of medium too big? or is it fine?
More importantly, is this a sweet diamond that I can give to my gf?

Thanks.

Have you asked if it's eye clean? Some SI2s are, many are not.

Girdle info?

Have you seen H's in person? Everyone's color sensitivity level is different. Try to see some in this size in person.

Interesting screen name

My center stone is 1.51 I SI2 and it faces up nice and white. On occassion I can see a very slight hint of color from the side and only under certain lighting conditions.

If the stone is wll cut and you are not too color sensitive, an H should be fine.

Color depends a lot on how well cut, and the admirers eye for it. It could face up just fine in this size.

You need to ask/see if it''s eyeclean.

I''d personally prefer no, or very small culet. But you need to see it and decide if it bothers you.

I am assuming you haven''t seen this stone? My biggest concern is the crown and pavillion angles, they are at a point where some light leakage could occur. I would want an ASET and IS image of it to see. Also, it''s facing up a bit smaller than it should.

If you can get those images, I would recommend it, if not, I''d keep looking.

4.4 on the HCA. You may be able to do better with some searching. It all depends on what''s important to you. Do you need a stone that large, or would a nicely cut 1.25ct be sufficient? You can probably get a better clarity and color, plus an excellent cut, if you go a bit smaller.

62 % is used as a cutoff for "ideal" in a lot of definitions.

The reason why the stone has a medium culet (yes, that's quite big on a modern round brill) is because the cutter tried to hide weight and the poor cut (steep/deep.)

Because it really is at the point where preferences don't really matter, Ideal Scope doesn't really matter, you will probably be able to see the difference for yourself.

It will not only have table leakage, but possibly leakage around the girdle as well, causing it to look smaller than it really is.

Guys,

Here''s what the vendor said:
"The inclusions are only feathers and clouds, that are around the girdle. These will not be visible to the naked eye, and can also have a prong mounted over it."

It''s not in-house.

By looking at the attached image, would you guys say that this is well cut?

I don''t need a stone that large (1.38). I''m looking more for a 1.30.

I''m not going to buy this one but I''d like the answer to the questions so I know how to proceed with the next diamond.
...

Speaking of the next diamond, what do you think of this one?
Round 1.31
G VS2 (GIA)
Depth%: 61.9
Table %: 55
Symmetry: EX
Polish: EX
Girdle: TN-M
Culet: N
Fluorescence: N
Measurements: 7.01x7.05x4.35
Cut Grade: Ideal

$8498.23

Seems a bit pricey...right?

Thanks.

a ideal cut G/VS2 1.30+ will usually run around 9-10K. I assume the graphic listed above is for the first stone, which in that case most people will say pass based on the HCA. You''ll want to post the crown and pav angles to get people''s opinion.

It''s not the inclusions that are the major issue, it''s the cut.

It''s very easy to understand, and you can input the numbers very quickly. It the HCA score is greater than 3, pick another stone.

Yup -- it comes to a 4.3, which is higher than you ideally want to be .....

In my opinion the problem with this stone isn''t the depth (61.9) or the table (55) really its the proportion of the pavillion and crown angles.... you will see if you lower the diamond''s crown angle from 35.5 to 34.6, and also lower the pavillion angle to 40.7 you end up with a diamond that is a little bit deep and sacrafices a little bit of spread, but you get a diamond with a lot more brilliance and a *ton* more fire.... which is reflected by the HCA score in the 1 region....right around where you want to be.

AN idealscope image will definitely help here. I suspect the combination of 35.5/41.2 may be slightly too high.

No, an H will not look too yellow once set, especially if set in white gold or platinum and is cut well. It will look different from a ''D'' stone. However, unless one is very colour sensitive or has a better colour grade to look at side-by-side, H appears a ''white'' enough colour to most.

As others have suggested, you may be able to find a better cut diamond.

Hey guys,

I moved on to a new diamond.
I''m digging this even more:

Shape: Round
Carat weight: 1.30
Cut: Ideal
Color: H
Clarity: SI1
Certificate: AGS
Depth: 61.5%
Table: 56.3%
Polish: Ideal
Symmetry: Ideal
Girdle: Thin to medium
Culet: None
Fluorescence: Neglible
Measurements: 6.98*7.02*4.31
Crown: 34.5
Pavilion: 40.9

This gives an HCA score of 1.6 - Excellent within TIC range.

It seems much better than my previous ones.
And thanks to your suggestions, I''m weeding out some with the HCA tool. Sweet!

I''ve attached the cert.

Thanks.

*agrees with above*

Numbers look nice and is a AGS light performance ''0''.

Go for it if it appeals to you.

The IS is attached.
I don't really know how to look at it.
Can you guys give comments on it please?

I'm thinking about getting either of these two rings from JamesAllen:
Platinum Classic Solitaire Diamond Engagement Ring (http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/classic-solitaire-settings.asp?module=setting&cid=57&item=602)
Platinum Elegant Solitaire Diamond Engagement Ring (http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/classic-solitaire-settings.asp?module=setting&cid=57&item=606)

My gf is a 4.5 ring size.
Do you guys think that the elegant will be too heavy (2.7mm wide vs 2.2mm)?

I've got three weeks til I propose
1.gif
so I have to pull the trigger soon.

I really appreciate everyone's help and input.

Thanx.

The IS is fine, a little tilted, but fine.

I personally like the second setting better, but either one would look pretty! Does she wear any other rings? to know how wide a band she might prefer?

No. My gf doesn''t wear any rings. So I have to guess.
I think I know her style though...simple yet elegant.
I''m now perving on the the Platinum HandMade Six Prong Basket Style Diamond Engagement Ring.
It looks sweet! I think it look a bit more elegant than the other two (but still simple).
I figured if I''m going to be dropping $7k on a diamond I might as well pay a couple hundred more to make the diamond pop out a bit more.

Am I wrong in assuming that this "handmade" ring will make it look better?

Thanx.

There''s tilt in the pic, which is why it looks off.

The 6 prong handmade!

I like the handmade one too. And you know that being handmade (provided it''s quality work) the setting would be designed around the centre stone.

The IS image is fine. Even with the tilting.

Just make sure with the vendor that the diamond is eye-clean being an SI1.
